Rice Paper

I find it frustrating that the world is becoming such a health conscious place, yet it is still ridiculously difficult to get healthy, or even semi-healthy, foods on the go.

My beautician, Jacqui, is a business owner, mum of one and general superwoman. She leads a busy life and often runs out of time to make herself lunch. Rice paper rolls are one of her favourite on-the-run meals, but she’s having a hard time finding good ones.

Help me out, Canberra! Where are Canberra’s best rice paper rolls?

The little Vietnamse place near Coles in Gungahlin (can’t remember the name of it, sorry), does a pretty decent line in rice paper rolls. Vege, chicken, prawn. You have to get there pretty early to get them.

IMO, the perfect rice paper roll is made with pickled vegetables, mint and served with thick, rich Hoi Sin sauce w/crushed nuts that are impossible to eat and remain ladylike simultaneously.

These days you get Hoi Sin sauce that’s watered down, bland veggies, and more Vermicelli(?) noodles than you need. I’ll be reading this taste off with enthusiasm!

I love Saigon Foodies in Kingston. All the food there is fantastic and the rice paper rolls are much better than Roll’d. They use fresh ingredients and they taste amazing!

I like the ones from Thai Chiang Rai in Kingston. I think they only have one type (prawn and vegetable) but they’re delicious!

Ipho or Roll’d in the city are both good choices.
