canberra's best schnitzel

Going out for a schnitty is about as Aussie as drinking a VB tinny at a John Farnham farewell concert. It’s a very safe bet, at least amongst my friends, that at any time of any day, someone is up for a schnitzel feed.

Everyone has their own schnitzels that they swear by, and this week, I’m on the hunt for Canberra’s best. It doesn’t matter how you take it – plain, parmigiana style, with gravy or a wedge of lemon, I want to discover Canberra’s finest.

To vote, let me know who dishes up your favourite schnitzel in the comments below. I’ll try the two most popular places and let you know the verdict in next Monday’s Taste Off article.

i’ll give dickson tradies a nod – took the visiting family members there recently and had a quite decent sized and well cooked schnitti with a lot of choice if you wanted fancy accoutrement.

another feed easier and often better done at home [bacon-wrapped and baked on bed of sliced veg]… so can we also ask who sells the best raw product?

The best pork in Canberra is to be found at Hee Sing butchers in Wooley St in Dickson. Tender juicy delicious. Wouldn’t buy from anywhere else.

One vote here for Woden Tradies.
Probably a similar setup and menu to Dickson. Decent size with lots of options of toppings/sauces as well as choices between chips or mash and vegies or salad.
Good price (even better if you’re a member of the club) and half price on Tuesdays I think.
Recently made it a family thing to go every couple of weeks.

Schnitzel Haus in Erindale was wonderful, both of the times that we’ve been there. The helpings are huge, the schnitzels are very tender and tasty, and the service was terrific. Only downside was it was a little more pricey than I was expecting, especially for a family of four. But great for a special dinner out.

+1. I went with a pork schnitty which was really good, but a tad small relative to cost.

Once upon a time, Dickson Tradies was the only place to go. I haven’t been there for more than 10 years though.

I second the last comment on the capital golf club on Jerrabomberra Ave, Narabundah for $10 its a great feed you get a choice of 4 sides and many sauces!!! but also on Monday nights there is $10 snitty $12 parmi and my fav is $15 make your own top it with what you like mmm yummy

Capital Golf Club on Jerrabomberra Ave, Narabundah..Has Huge fresh daily-Not frozen schnitzels avail for lunch 7 days a week with chips & salad or veg and mash, with the choice of mushroom, pepper, dianne, garlic sauce or just plain gravy at only $10..Also avail for $10 Monday nights also I believe..

Austrian Club in Mawson. Cant beat it for traditional, tasty and a good price!

Wilbur’s Cafe at Hackett shops – 2 versions – with chips & salad or veggies & mash, plus a choice of 3 sauces (mushroom, pepper or dianne). The chicken is thick and juicy and the crumbs nice and thin. Best around and I’ve tried lots :).

Olims at Ainslie do a very good, and very large schnitzel. I am not sure if they still have it, but they used to have 2 for the price of 1 schnitzel one day a week, Tuesday I think?

Eastlakes footy club in Griffith/Kingston. If you can find a better quality feed than this for $10 in all of Canberra, please share the details with me.

Its my rainy day lunch spot…

I like the RUC in Barton. Big, juicy and delicious!

10 years ago would have agreed, but now just plain ordinary, just like the whole club.

I haven’t actually been here but apparently the Schnitzel Haus in Braddon is great.

PS – Can we call you Christopher Schnitti?

Was distinctly underwhelmed by the Schnitzel House. Overpriced and fairly bland.

Agree.

Raiders Club Gungahlin isn’t bad.

-1 Schnitzel Haus (Small for $25)

+1 Austrian Club (The potato dumplings with gravy to go with it)

For tradition (in Canberra at least) Dickson Tradies has to get a guernsey in this test. Just a shame you can’t still enjoy your meal inside the tram carriage!

Other possible options include The Dock and The Durham in Kingston.

Austrian Club in Mawson. Huge, cheap and drowned in gravy.

Going out for a schnitty might be an Aussie thing to do, but let’s hand it to the Germans for doing it right. In my opinion, you can’t beat a veal schnitzel from Zierholz in Fyshwick.
