Best of Canberra: Steak (straight up)

steak-best-of

I still pine for days gone by, when I lived around the corner from an Argentinean steak house in London. The menu was limited to steak (big or small) and corn on the cob, with a local form of crème caramel for after’s. It was good food cooked perfectly.

Is there anywhere in Canberra to sample such delights? Where is your go to restaurant when you’re after a good old-fashioned steak?

Do you enjoy it medium or still mooing?

Apologies to the vegetarians out there. We’ll focus on you guys next week!

The little restaurant in the Press Club always did a great steak, I haven’t been there for a few years but it was hands down the best. Nice chilli butter too.

And have you got a sauce for your steaks?

Stop it….stop it…..your killing me. Sounds great !

I’d even be tempted to hop on a Light Rail to get to the Kingo for that !

Some one told me a few weeks back that there were good steaks at a place at Kingston Foreshore but I cant remember the name and havnt tried the place my self.

I vote 1 for the char grilled steaks at the Helenic club in Woden. Yummy.

Or the Charcoal Grill in London Circuit – fantastic.

Chisolm Vikings do a fantastic $10 rump for lunch on weekdays.

good-o, so when are we expected..?

Another vote for the Kingo Pub. Simple, well-priced, delicious.

Note the first two suggestions both have a DIY option (Kingo). That is because there is nowhere to go for a good steak in Canberra. Pretty sad really.

(Sorry, I know it’s my second post in a fortnight about this spot but…)

I really can’t go past my local, the Durham in Kingston, for a medium-rare t-bone or rib eye (thick & still on the bone) with mushroom sauce & chips – so beautifully cooked – and the price isn’t bad either… Washed down with a Stone & Wood beer

Best is seared at high temp on my own charcoal kamado joe grill and the best steaks are dry aged grass fed. I used to go to Charcoal Grill quiet a bit but not for a while.

The Kingo and Charcoal cooked medium rare.

Haven’t been to either for ages, but the two options that come to mind are the steak place in the Melbourne Building and the DIY option at the Kingo.
