Best of Canberra - Sushi

Exciting times for me this week. I’m filling in for the Best Of Canberra series while Bec is on holidays – lucky thing! I now have an excuse to eat all in the name of work.

Arguably one of the more popular lunches that falls into the categories of cheap, quick, easy, and semi-okay for you nutrition wise, is sushi. One of my favourites.

Growing up on the coast, 10 years ago sushi would have been considered an exotic food but now it’s everywhere and Canberra is no exception. Whether it’s grabbing a roll to go or sitting down for a feast at a sushi train, everyone seems to be on board these days.

Sushi comes in all types and all colours. White rice, brown rice, black rice, no rice, cooked tuna, raw salmon, chicken schnitzel (definitely not the most traditional sort!), eel, egg, vegetables. Pretty much anything you could want is available. I’m a brown rice cooked tuna girl myself. So tell me, Canberra: where can I find our best sushi?

only place for low end [ie not akiba] japanese in canberra is tasuke – one of the pioneers and still awesome. and a japanese chef, not korean… sushi is excellent, as is the rest of the menu (hadn’t known they branched out to belco – still at home base in civic interchange)

Tasuke in Belconnen Mall did good sushi, but it’s sadly gone now. Replaced by something which offers a horribly nightmarish version of the same.

Honestly, IORI is the only place I would consider in Canberra. Most of the ‘sushi’ you see around the place is pretty gross.

Hipster w*nker credentials: lived in a small fishing village on Shikoku in Japan and was mates with a guy who owned a couple of ships. Tuna and bonito sashimi straight of the boats. Very cautious about raw fish in Australia, esp Canberra.

The place downstairs at the hyperdrome is good.

+1. Their rolls with black rice are pretty good, as is the traditional rice. Don’t ruin it with brown rice. All of the wasabi and soy in the world cannot make brown rice taste nice.

I haven’t found anywhere in Tuggeranong I trust to do nigiri yet.

Sushi Sushi in the city market near Supabarn is always really good.

Lots of comments about Mr Sushi… and there’s a few Mr Sushi shops too! Manuka, Weston, Gungahlin. Has anyone tried all of them?

Mee’s is bland and uninspired, but still attracts a huge crowd because it held the sushi monopoly for a long time. The Sushi Smith is a better choice on Manuka as is the other new one whose name escapes me.

Totally agree on Mee’s – don’t really understand what the big deal is. Sushi Smith was marginally better but unfortunately they closed up shop a couple of weeks ago.

Shame – only 3 sushi eateries in Manuka now.

Wait. What’s the third one?

I only knew of Mee’s, Mr Sushi (about 100m from Mee’s, across the road from the petrol station), and Sushi Smith the one that has just closed down. There’s another!?

Agreed with the above comments. I am living in Kingston, have been a long time customer with Mee. One day i was filling petrol and realized there is one called Mr Sushi right opposite. Just coz i have been Mee for so long i dont even notice any other sushi place just not far away So i give it a try. I was impressed. it just simply fresh and more options. Customer service much better than the QUICK service by Mee.

The place downstairs at the hyperdrome is good. So is the one in Erindale for cheap and quick.

I loved Mr Sushi than the others too. Mee’s one is like quick and easy but if we talk about real jap sushi, Mr sushi one better, at least i can tell the different like their seaweed is fresh not chewy, rice had mixed with good portion of vinegar which is the important part of a Sushi!!!

Yup, across the road – Wok Me Noodle bar serves up Sushi as well.

Ahhh, of course! I’d forgotten about that place.

Mr Sushi in Cooleman Court, Weston gets my vote. Always fresh and tasty.

I got some very fresh sashimi at Coo once before it burnt down – a live slug in my salad! There aren’t many options for decent, genuine Japanese food in Canberra so I’m interested to find out if there are any I haven’t tried yet. I’ve always found Wasabi in Manuka good for sit in dining and the one at the bottom of Belco mall for take away is very fresh and tasty.

Definitely have to agree with Mee’s in Manuka – beautifully fresh, easy to stop in and grab some, and very quick service (read not great service, just quick!).

If you want a sit down meal of sushi (and incredible sashimi!!) then Iori is a no-brainer for sure!

Marginally better than mediocre sushi is rare in Canberra.

Mee’s is bland and uninspired, but still attracts a huge crowd because it held the sushi monopoly for a long time. The Sushi Smith is a better choice on Manuka as is the other new one whose name escapes me.

Ace Sushi at the Belconnen Markets was fantastic when it first opened, then it went budget. Miki and Sushi Bay at the Belco mall are fairly reasonable. Iori is over rated. Kagawa in Dickson is not too bad, but the range is small and it is more focused on bento and set offerings rather than individual sushi rolls. Akiba is what happens when paleo-hipsters discover sushi, the result is not pleasant.

Akiba have an amazing “Raw” menu which comprises different types of sushi nigri.

The Hero sushi train in the North Quarter of the Canberra Centre isn’t bad either.

Sushi in Canberra is not the best. With one wonderful exception:

miki in Belconnen Mall.

We were surprised when we tried it. They have an excellent range of standard and novel sushi, nori and sashimi. They use genuine sushi rice, fresh, moist and firmly pressed with really fresh fish and seafood.

They are happy to make it up it fresh for you on the spot if you ask.

The only thing I can fault, is that they are on the other side of Canberra and I can’t eat there all the time! 😉

Mee’s in Manuka – the line at lunchtime is often out the door, and for good reason!
