Best of Canberra - Take Away (suburban)

Friday nights and take away go together like peanut butter and jelly. Growing up, Friday night was always fish and chip night. As a family of four we would go together to pick up a big parcel of deep fried goodness, wrapped in old newspaper. Potato scallops, crumbed fish and chips with extra salt and lemon was our usual order. As an adult, I still find it so exciting that I can go and buy take away any time I like, I have to exercise great self-control having this kind of responsibility. Especially now that you can pretty much get any food you desire as a take away option, from burgers and fish and chips to Pad Thai and curries.

So where should I go this Friday night? What is, and where is Canberra’s best take away (suburban)?

recently moved here. Ohh yeah, I have heard about Calwell’s service (in a negative way) 😛
hopefully the final product would be worth that 😛

What sort of jelly? Raspberry? Lime?….

I would personally go with Strawberry ….. mmmm Peanut Butter and Jelly. I think I will fix myself a PB&J Sandwich when I get home!

Or, ask your mom to make it.

Hands down the best is the one at Kambah village. Great value, clean food and good service.

@mess @Sophia Thank you. I’ll be sure to check RJs out one night.

I can’t believe someone hasn’t picked up on this: Peanut butter and jelly??? WTF?
Pie and sauce maybe, vegemite and toast but peanut butter and jelly. Sorry but to quote such an American analogy on a post of Australian nostalgia doesn’t make sense.
Flame away…
BTW Queanbeyan Bowlo on Yass Rd does great fish and chips. You even get a slice of orange in the salad!

I miss going to the pieman for a pie with peas and hot sauce with a bottle of ginger beer to wash it down. My heart doesn’t, but I do.

But they rap about Peanut Butter and Jelly in the videos!

Flame away …

I loved getting take out from the Kaleen Shops, they had amazing chips (the one Giralang end with the bigger Supabarn) but they quite often were closed by 730pm.

Now that I’ve moved from Giralang to Gungahlin I’m yet to find a good takeaway out my way. Any suggestions ?? Please don’t recommend Charcoal Chicken at Bonner shops, they’re over priced and horrible.

“RJ’s caravan in Woden is open until the early hours most nights.”

Thank you both.

Where in Woden is RJ’s caravan located?

————————————————————–

RJ’s is on Corrina St in Woden. It’s actually in the car park on the coles side of the shopping centre, where Trash & Treasure is held.

Oh a question for the hive mind: where in this town, after 9pm on a Friday night, can one get a greasy spoon style hamburger with the lot?

I had a craving a couple of weeks back and had to go unfulfilled.

Dolly’s RIP, haha!

Bluey’s Cafe at the Dickson Tradies is open until 4am, and they do ‘the lot’ burgers.

“The G Spot” at the Gungahlin Lakes Club is also open until 3am on a Friday night, if you’re hankering for that ‘burger cooked and served from a caravan in a carpark’ experience.

Calwell takeaway does an excellent burger and decent pizzas.

And consistently the worst chips of any takeaway anywhere! Honestly, how can you stuff chips up? You put them in the fryer for about 3 minutes. Awful. Not very friendly service either.

I went to the Calwell take away on the first day we moved to Calwell just about 10 years ago to get a quick fix befroe unpacking boxes. I don’t believe I have ventured back as the service (whilst I got my order well enough), was certainly not with a smile. It was pretty much like being a bit of a pain by asking for something.

Still, seems to do a fair trade – Friday and Saturday nights particularly. May be that is just laziness on the part of the purchaser, like going to McDonalds drive thru with the kids.

Watson was always great, back in the day Fisher takeaway was great, too.

London Burgers are open until Midnight on Fri/Sat but alas, not in the city anymore 🙁

Grill’d in the city is also open until 10 every day. Not really a ‘takeaway’ but they do a decent burger with the lot.

I’ve only been once but mostly because the service was pretty poor and the burger was average.

For me, I like Watson Takeaway and also Palmerston, I haven’t had the pizzas from Palmerston but apparently they’re pretty decent.

Karabar Takeaway is by far the best. I know it’s Queanbeyan, but still I’ve been to most takeaways in Canberra and would happily drive 40 minutes for one of the gourmet burgers there.

Karabar Takeaway has good potato scallops and chips! 🙂

Karabar is great. Proper greasies and burgers.

Potato scallops > Potato cakes.

Thank you!

If it’s greasy spoon takeaway you’re after, then, yes, Watson is by far the best I’ve had in Canberra.

If you’re sticking to Northside I would also recommend Mee Sing Chinese from Lyenham shops. As an added bonus you can order from the “Australian meals” and still get a serve of fish’n’chips too (IIRC).

Mee Sing may not be the most authentic Asian meal you’ll ever have, but as a reliable takeaway it’s very hard to beat and I dearly miss it now that I’m on the wrong side of the lake.

The staff are friendly (once you get to know them), the servings are generous and they use good quality meat.

I recommend the boneless deep fried lemon chicken and the Penang curry. Try it out, even if not for this test, you’ll be supporting a long-time Canberra institution!

Steves at Melba are good right across the board.
