Morning, noon or night, I always love a good burrito. Yes, even in the morning – breakfast burritos are definitely a thing. We actually had a vote come in specifically for the breaky burrito from Sweet Bones in Braddon. If you’re not yet acquainted with this phenomenon, I recommend you get on the bandwagon.

Speaking of votes, when I put the call out for Canberra’s best burrito last week it was pretty clear that there are only a few places leading the way in this space and, apart from the one vote for Sweet Bones, most votes were for chain restaurants – even the wraps from Macca’s got a mention.

Mad Mex and Beach Burrito Company both came highly recommended, but the two places that received the most votes were Zambrero and Guzman y Gomez. I am no stranger to either of these places, but on Friday I went into Civic for a little lunchtime taste testing.

Guzman y Gomez

First up, I grabbed a burrito from Guzman y Gomez. With two franchises in Canberra, one in the Canberra Centre in the City and one at Westfield Belconnen, Guzman serves its burritos with rice, whole black beans, salsa and your choice of meat or veggies, mild or spicy.

Being a Friday lunch, the place was packed full of people and the good vibes were flowing. I always appreciate that Guzman uses super fresh ingredients in their burritos – the veggies are always crisp and the beans are whole. On top of all that, you can get a frozen margarita or a glass of sangria to wash it all down. Bonus!

Zambreros

Next, I made my way over to Zambrero in the City Bus Interchange to try one of their creations. Being a Canberra girl born and bred, I do like that Zambrero started here first and foremost. Ten years on, there are now stores in NZ and Thailand, as well as across Australia – pretty impressive for a little Canberra start up. I also like their Plate 4 Plate program, supporting food relief agencies internationally and in Australia.

When it comes to their burritos though, they are quite different from Guzman. They use refried beans, instead of whole beans, and their meat is always that little bit saucier. They also have more of a takeaway sort of vibe – I think most people come in, grab their burrito and take it with them. While they do have tables, the store was relatively empty for a Friday lunch rush.

While I do still enjoy a Zambrero burrito every now and then, I think Guzman is my number one preference. With a better in store vibe and whole beans in their burritos, Guzman y Gomez is my pick for Canberra’s best burrito.
