Good quality bread and fresh ingredients are the makings of a great fresh sandwich or roll. This is what I was looking for when I put the call out for Canberra’s best sandwiches and rolls last week.

When it came to the votes, a number of cafes, bakeries and sandwich shops got a nomination. Cafe D’Lish in Deakin was the obvious front runner, with Autolyse in Braddon and Dobinsons Bakery Cafe in the City close behind.

In the end, it was to be a showdown between Cafe D’Lish and Autolyse. So on Friday lunch I set out to try the first sandwich of the taste off at Autolyse.

Autolyse

Autolyse is on Lonsdale Street in Braddon. Autolyse is first and foremost a bakery, so I was pretty excited to get my mouth around one of their sandwiches. They make their sandwiches fresh every morning with 6 different flavour combinations. I tried the roast pumpkin sandwich ($9) with pesto, fetta, olives and rocket. The ingredients were fresh, the flavour combo was tasty and the bread was the absolute hero of the sandwich tying it all together.

Next I tried Cafe D’Lish at the Deakin shops. I tried to go on Saturday, but I missed their closing time (2pm) by a measly 15 minutes. Unfortunately they don’t open on Sundays, so I dropped by on my way to work on Monday to get my lunch sorted and taste test their sandwich menu.

Cafe DLish

With 13 different filling options, Cafe D’Lish has an extensive sandwich/roll menu. All their sandwiches and rolls are made to order on the spot and if none of them tickle your fancy, you can customise your own. Their sandwiches also have fun names inspired by the country the ingredients most reflect. I went for “The Persian” on multigrain bread ($7.80). It was a delicious combination of chickpea pattie, grated carrot, lettuce, tomato chutney and home made hummus. Let’s not forget about the bread which was nice and fresh too.

Picking a winner for this week’s taste off has been one of the hardest yet. Autolyse and Cafe D’Lish come pretty close on the fresh sandwich front. While I think I prefer the sourdough bread from Autolyse, when it comes to the crunch, Cafe D’Lish is my pick for a down-to-earth sandwich or roll with good quality bread and a big selection of fresh fillings.

Cafe D’Lish takes out the win for Canberra’s best sandwich.

been to blue olive after suggestions and had a good time having a fresh , ever refreshing sandwich !

So its Social Media and not Quality and Quantity that make a good sandwich? I for one have had better around town. Dobinsons, Fancy Fillings, Rolls Choice just to name a few…!

And PS there’s way too much rocket in the Autolyse sandy. Rocket should be used sparingly, not as a filler to cover up the paucity of the other fillings. Big fail IMHO.

Good decision. The Persian sandy at D’Lish is awesome. May I say it’s better on a Turkish roll though. D’Lish is a bit expensive but always fresh, tasty and delicious. I’m always looking for an excuse to go there.

blue olive all the way. fresh breads, great taste 🙂

One more for Blue Olive – albeit too late. If the sandwiches you tried are those in the pictures They are not a patch on Blue Olive. And for $10 you can’t beat them. I may even get down there this week.

I think you will find readers far more responsive to a sanger test in the summer months. It would be interesting to give this one a re-run when the weather is stinking hot.

Blue Olive does make a damn fine sandwich – definitely recommend trying!

Ahh, okay, no problems. Thanks for the explanation. 🙂

No mention for Blue Olive, which had twice as many nominations as Dobinsons and the same number as Autolyse. 😛

Oh well.

Hey Holden, the tally takes into account all votes received both on the website and via social media, so it’s likely that Cafe D’Lish got more votes on social media than Blue Olive or Dobinsons this time around. At any rate, Blue Olive sounds pretty good. I hadn’t heard of it until last week’s sandwich call out. Definitely one to add to the list.
