If you’re planning on renovating your bathroom, kitchen, or laundry, then you know that along with choosing the hardware and layout of the space, you’ll need to select some tiling. But with so many options available to you between size, colour, and patterns, as well as the difficulties of sourcing the materials, trying to take on the task yourself seems impossible. So, why not consider hiring a professional tiler to take care of it for you?

A professional tiler will be key in making the renovation process run smoothly. They come with all the know-how and tricks of the trade to make sure that you’re left with a professional and high-quality finish. As bathrooms and kitchens are especially high-traffic areas of the home, doing everything you can to avoid ill-fitted or unattractive tiling is crucial.

But how can you know how to pick a good tiler? In this article, we’ll give you an outline of some key factors to consider when hiring a professional tiler, as well as a list of some of Canberra’s top services.

What makes a great tiler?

Let’s discuss some of the most important things to think about when choosing a tiler.

  • Experience. When looking around for a tiler, make sure you’re checking their portfolios and testimonials. You want to know that the company you hire has experience tiling spaces similar to yours, and in styles that you like.
  • Reliability. The renovation process is involved and meticulous. Therefore, having a tiler that you can rely on is very important. The best tilers should understand your timeline and budget, and consistently show up on time and work efficiently.
  • Quality. Poor material and installation will impact the look of your tiling and its performance over time. Look for a company that uses reliable, experienced tilers, and offers warranties and quality guarantees on their installation. Check their portfolio or examples of previous work to verify their quality.
  • Expert advice. A professional tiler should know enough about the materials they’re working with to help advise you on what’s going to look and work best for your space. The best tilers make sure functionality is balanced with appearance, and will offer their opinion to ensure the result is the best.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I tile my bathroom myself?

Tiling is a pretty DIY-friendly task, but it requires a lot of careful preparation, patience and precision. Hiring a professional to do it for you will save you the headache, and also help you avoid having poorly installed tiles that are prone to disrepair.

How often should I re-tile my bathroom?

Due to constant exposure to moisture, the grouting on your tiling will begin to peel and crack and compromise the durability of your tiles. The recommended frequency to replace your tiles is every 3-5 years.

What material works best for tiling?

This depends on whether or not you're talking about tiling a floor or tiling walls. If it's a floor, consider using tiles with a rougher texture such as cork, which will give you more grip as your bathroom floor gets wet. In terms of pricing, vinyl tiles are an excellent choice, as they are quite durable, adequately textured, and far more affordable than stone tiles.

Should I get my tiles professionally cleaned?

If you're not willing to do the grunt work, or don't have much time on your hand, there many tile & grout cleaning services available. Check out this article for some great recommendations.

What tiling materials are environmentally friendly?

When considering the environmental impact of your tiles, consider how they are mined and installed. The most environmentally friendly tiles are ceramic and porcelain, as they are a plentiful resource that are easy to mine and manufacture. Many ceramic tiles feature recycled content which further reduces the environmental impact, and porcelain is made up of easily sourced materials such as clay, silica and flint. Additionally, both materials are incredibly long-lasting.

I wanted to give a second mention to Geoff at GT Protiling. He has done two jobs for me, one small kitchen job at an investment property and then years later my bathroom, laundry and toilet.
His work is exceptional and in the end that’s what you have to live with.

Geoff from GT Protiling – 0412734053 – I have had 8-10 tiling jobs (bathrooms, laundry, kitchen backsplashes and alfresco) completed at different properties over the last 15-20 years using different tilers with varying results from poor to wonderful. My current tiler Geoff does a fantastic job and I have used him since 2016. He pays attention to detail and takes pride in his work to give you a really good result. Competitive pricing commensurate with excellent work and I would highly recommend.

We recently used Ulises Tiling to renovate our kitchen and bathroom. We will definitely use him again and would recommend to anyone.

Had ulises around to quote today. Seemed like a good bloke, his company also does everything which is interesting. Anyone else used him recently?

I found J&M Tiling the cheapest out of the quotes I received. They also did a quality job on our bathroom & living areas. Give Mark a call 0438132491

$60 pm sq is a bit on the high side.$50 pmsq is a more realistic, that is what I charge with my 25 years expiriance is stone/ceramic tiling.call me on 0416863584 for a free quote. Thanks

Thx Pinch. Good to know. And you were spot on about the 60×60 rectified tiles.

I’m not being a Scrooge, as I said, it costs what it costs, but as I’ve never had to get a quote for tiling I wasn’t sure on what the going rare is.

If you are paying $80m2 for your tiles then I would assume the tile is a large (450 x 450 to 600 x 600) rectified porcelain tile. Which are a lot more difficult and expensive to lay than the smaller cushion edged tiles of old. If this is the case then the proper leveling of the floor is required to ensure the tiles meet perfectly and don’t lip (quality self leveler is expensive and will need latex additive for use over heating. A quality/expensive tile adhesive rated for use over heating will be required also). In my experience working over heating is always more difficult no matter how well it is done. The 5 days seem reasonable considering the leveling and I think you have been quoted a reasonable price. I have been tiling for 15 years, 10 of those working in my bathroom renovation company that rested me from the daily punishment of tiling, but I would do the occasional large floor area and as of last year for 600 x 600 porcelain I was charging $80m2 + gst for fixing the tiles alone.

I named the tile shop not the tiler. Anyone who says they will do it for less if you pay them cash knows the risks. Especially in Canberra where anyone you meet might work for the ATO. I know of people who have called the tax office after being quoted cash jobs, so more fool the tradie really.

Do you think much scrooge

This a cashy job, like under the table psst and your naming a legit business recommending tradies that do cashies.

I know for bamboo floorboards they were quoting me from $30-$50 per sqm. In the end I did it myself, but i did have sore knees and back. I’ve retiled small areas before and its not a quick and easy job. I’d rather clean loos than be a tiler! You can always get a few quotes, but I’d ask the right questions like grout used (or supply the grout yourself for a discount).

About $45-$75 per sqm is what you’ll come across. I know it’s a huge difference (and makes a big difference), but anything in that range is reasonably fair.

The “possible extra $750” seems a bit suspicious. I would’ve thought if there were levelling issues then it’d just be a screed and self-levelling concrete job….if at all (but I’m not a tradie or anything!).

Make sure to select the grout colour and buy it as well. Then make sure they mix is correctly…nothing worse than dirty/incorrectly mixed grout…looks awful and can only be fixed by re-grouting.

The other thing…tiles are damn heavy – anything that saves /your/ back is a bonus.

I had my kitchen/living room area tiled a few years back and managed to do a cash-in-hand job for $45 per sqm…and the guy did an excellent job. His name was Henry…but can’t recall number or anything (but could look for it)…if he even does it anymore! This was years ago :)p

And, yeah, in most cases you’ll pay more for tiling than the tiles…

Old thread, I know… but has anyone taken on gun street girl’s recommendation and used Ulises Tiling? Thinking of letting him loose on our bathroom and it would be comforting to hear more good things about the work of the person whose going to pocket near on $20K of our cash!

Just did the main bathroom and had an amazing tiler who he said he didn’t mind if I passed on details.

Andrew Morrisbey. PH: 0417 264 505

Fantasic attention to detail. Waterproofing, edging, design advice all part of the service.

I must say though, he takes a long time and you have to keep prodding for him to turn up.

But, the upshot is, the people who have seen the job are amazed, they have never seen such a complete job done, this goes for several of the other tradies doing painting etc.

Good things come to those who wait.
