I am due to undertake some training in my new job (time management and supervisory skills) and just wondering where I should go (my boss has left it up to me to find a provider).

There are a bunch of private providers and CIT.

Does anyone have an opinion on the best ones?

The one I own 🙂

But you probably don’t want personal testemonials so I can tell you what questions you should be asking:

Is the course accredited? How many units of competence does it cover and what qualifications can I use this towards?

Is there funding available? and if so, under what program? The Productivity Places Program offered some great discounts ($800 for a diploma level course) but be aware that training companies only got places from the government for a specific person named in their tender application. If they are advertising PPP places they are breaching guidelines. However there are other funding sources available such as traineeships or Priorities Support Programs.

How much class contact time is there? Distance learning often sounds great but how much free time do I honestly have? More students drop off distance courses and there is greater chance of success in a classroom.

Can I apply for recognition of prior learning and use a process that does not just consist of you giving me the unit and me making the process up. I would like a structured process that won’t take longer than attending classroom.

What resources am I given or do I have to buy additional resources?

Will the trainer give me extra 1:1 support if I need it? Will they come to my workplace? Is it capped?

What is your fee refund policy?

Can I contact someone out of hours or online if I need help at the times when I am doing my homework/study?

Will the trainer review draft work prior to assessment? Can I resubmit assessments if I don’t achieve competency the first time?

Can the assessments be contextualised to my workplace or the job I am doing?

How many people will be in the class?

How involved is the training organisation with industry and the training community? Assure yourself that what they are teaching you in the course has been validated with local industry bodies and employers so you know you are getting the skills employers want you to have.

Can I get my certificate as soon as I am competent or do I have to wait for an annual graduation?

How much of the course cost is overheads to pay for the hot lunch? If I choose not to eat it can I have a fee reduction? 🙂 Contrary to some opinions I have heard lately, a hot lunch does not equal a good course.

Wow that was a comprehensive answer!! Just found this when I searched for “training”. Which training company do you own?
