To many of us, grass is quite simply grass. That is of course, until you need to source some. And once you really start looking you quickly realise that not all grass is created equal.

Some grasses are shade tolerant, heat resistant, insect resistant – while others less so. Some have broad brisk blades while others are feathery soft. There are grasses for cold season climates and grasses for warm season climates. So many options and we haven’t even dipped our toes into artificial grass yet!

If you are looking to lay some new lawn in Canberra, then you are sure to understand this predicament. No doubt you want a glamorously green, year-round effortless lawn but how do you find the product that is right for you, and of course our local conditions?

The good news is that the experts are only a click and call away. Turf and artificial grass suppliers are true specialists, with years of experience propagating lawns across the ACT. Some focus on live varieties and others carry synthetic lines, ultimately providing greater options to suit your look and lifestyle.

But where to begin? Fortunately, we have rounded up the best turf and artificial grass suppliers in the Canberra region, so do read on!

What makes a great turf and artificial grass supplier in Canberra?

Selecting the right lawn is a big decision to make. With many artificial and natural options, finding a great supplier will ensure you are paired with the lawn that matches your effort, and the reward. The best turf and artificial grass suppliers will source and install your lawn with ease; and will be on hand for maintenance should the need arise. Here are few tips on what to look for when sourcing your lawn supplier:

  • Knowledge. Instant lawns are living breathing plants; requiring specific care and specific conditions. Similarly, artificial grass comes in an array of constructs each suited to footfall and climate. Subsequently, look for suppliers who quite literally know one blade of grass from another.
  • Quality. There is more to grass than meets the eye. Selecting a reputable supplier who stocks quality products is vital to the longevity of your lawn. In the same way that some plants look healthier than others in a nursery, some grasses are in better shape than others when laid. Conversely, some artificial grasses are of better quality than others – so look for those that hold up to Canberra’s summers.
  • Durability. A great lawn will withstand highly trafficked areas season after season. So, when looking for your supplier be sure to find one that has an emphasis on durability. Ensure that they stock lawn options to suit your level of use. Take particular care when researching durability for pets on artificial grass, and for natural grass that can sit comfortably in Canberra’s climate.
  • Expert installation. Regardless of your product of choice, a proper installation will ensure your lawn thrives and stands the test of time. With so much preparation required before the turf is even laid look for suppliers who are skilled in installation. This should include the appropriate soil conditioning for natural grass, and of course the correct base, edging, and drainage for synthetic.
  • Warranties & after care. For added peace of mind look for suppliers who offer warranties particularly for artificial grass, and after care servicing for natural. There is nothing worse than seeing your freshly laid lawn fall victim to the elements. Thus having the expertise of your installer at hand to nurture your lawn back to health is incredibly advantageous.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is artificial lawn made of?

Artificial lawn is constructed utilising synthetic fibres generally polypropylene or polyethylene. Your supplier should be able to provide details on the construct of the lawn itself along with any preparation required underfoot.

How long does artificial grass generally last?

Wear and tear and of course maintenance are key drivers to longevity. Those with pets should take particular care as this type of wear can significantly impact the lifespan of synthetic grass. That said, properly maintained synthetic grass can last anywhere from 5 to 15 years, and in some cases even longer.

How do you maintain artificial grass?

Minimal maintenance is required for artificial grass. Sweeping or gentle use of a leaf blower can eliminate debris such as leaves. For any pet waste, a light hosing or wipe down with cold water should do the trick. To lift any high traffic areas a light fluffing can also help. Always refer to manufacturer instructions for care and if in doubt consult your supplier.

How long does turf take to settle?

Typically, turf can take anywhere from 2-6 weeks for roots to settle. The time frame is subject to not only proper soil preparation and maintenance once laid, but also climatic conditions. For further information specific to your type of turf always consult your supplier.

How do you maintain new turf?

Your turf installer should provide instructions on care once laid. Generally speaking, newly laid turf does require some attention. Firstly, water frequently and add nutrients to foster root development. Next, be sure to keep off the grass to allow the roots to take to the soil. Then, carefully remove any debris such as leaves or twigs. Finally, mow regularly taking off small amounts once the grass is growing well.

We have recently got our backyard re-done through Evergreen Turf people in mitchell. They were very competative in pricing compared to other estimates received. We read their reviews prior to contacting them and they have provided same service with quality product. We highly recommend them.

There is a good product inspired by Italy available.

It is sold in Canberra as “Concreta”.

Never needs watering or mowing.

The dog poo might be easier to wash off too 🙂

I go along with what chiflean said, “Please don’t do it. There is enough plastic everywhere without slapping more of it in your garden.”
My neighbour had artificial lawn and a dog. Bad combination, as the lawn looked disgusting with obvious dog poo, as unlike real lawn the poo couldn’t break down and disintegrate into the ground and just sat on display as deposited. Even after being picked up there appeared signs of the poo left behind. The rest of her garden was immaculate, so I don’t think this was just from neglect. I imagine all sorts of rubbish would just sit there on the plastic.
I got rid of all my lawn and replaced it with chips. I have planted it out with low mainly native ground covers. There are far better alternatives than plastic lawn. The chips and plants have so far proved to be low maintenance.

I’ve got natural lawn, but if I was going artificial I would go to Canberra CSG at Mitchell. They have a variety of artificial lawns available, some which look particularly realistic.

Not associated with them at all, was just impressed with their samples during a visit.

Please don’t do it. There is enough plastic everywhere without slapping more of it in your garden. There are low water ground covers if you really don’t want real lawn.

I house sat at a place that had Eco-Lush lawns, based in Tuggeranong. They’d had it for a while and it was ageing quite well, and looked more natural than not.
