Whether you are a parent looking to support for your child, or a student who knows they need a helping hand, you have come to the right place. Many students know all too well the frustration of being completely lost in the curriculum. Those who share in this experience will know that once you miss a milestone it becomes increasingly more difficult to bridge the gap. Private tutoring has long been the aid to many a student, from kindergarten through to the final years of university.

Offering something unique to our class-based education system; tutoring thrives on individualised and personalised learning. Available for a raft of subjects, tutoring can be delivered one-to-one, in small groups, and even virtually.

Luckily for us Canberra is home to an abundance of great minds. We are spoilt for choice with thought leaders in business, politics, health, science, and of course education. So where does one find our regions finest tutors? Read on below to find out more.

What makes a great tutor?

Great tutors facilitate the lifelong learning of students. They do this by providing the foundational building blocks needed to progress forward. Bet it math or humanities and everything in between, they nurture academic growth in the leaders of tomorrow. To help you find the best and brightest tutoring minds look out for the following:

  • Content specific expertise. While this may at first seem obvious, one cannot stress the importance of having real subject matter expertise. And when I say expertise, this means an innate understanding of academic content, knowing all concepts, ideas, and problems, inside out. The best tutors are indeed experts and use this to their full advantage. They enthral students by provide real-world anecdotes or project-based activities, bringing learning to life.
  • Builds strong relationships. Tutors fulfil a different role to that of teachers and parents, putting them in a unique position to support students. Indeed, this support can only be successful once a strong relationship is formed. And an engaged student opens the door to trust and respect which are essential aspects of learning. Consequently, the best tutors listen, communicate, minimise weaknesses, and teach to strengths, building strong relationships.
  • Personalised learning. No two students are ever alike, and neither should their learning be. And when it comes to delivering personalised learning experiences, private tuition really comes into its own. There is only so much a class or group environment can offer, and the best tutors recognise this. They identify strengths, find weaknesses, and bridge the gap between the two. Importantly, they make learning appropriately rigorous, challenging enough, yet not so tough that it creates frustration. Moreover, the best tutors will align their program with a student’s current class-based learning. They liaise with teachers or parents to obtain the syllabus and initiate regular communication to better understand opportunities for growth.
  • Theory & application. Let’s face it. If we wanted to complete worksheets for days, we would simply find them on the internet! A true tutor artfully combines theory with practical application to hammer home academic learning. To do this they invest a significant amount of time ensuring you have the theory down pat. Then they make the theory real by allowing you to put it to practise. Be weary of any tutors who fail to provide the theoretical backbones which are essential to successful learning.
  • Offers flexible delivery. The way we work, and indeed study, has evolved in recent times. And the need of flexible modes to deliver learning or tuition is ever more prevalent. Therefore, seek a tutor who offers services which cater to your needs. Many tutors will offer a combination of face-to-face and remote learning, be it through video conferencing, by phone, or live chat. Others may offer both individual and group-based sessions. Consider your availability and learning style; and look for a tutor that can support this.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a tutor?

A tutor provides academic support to complement a student’s core learning. They are responsible for helping students understand components of, and entire subject matter.

How is a teacher different from a tutor?

Generally, a teacher is someone how leads a formal learning session adhering to set curriculum in a structured environment. They hold professional licensure and qualifications, and typically practice in public or private education systems. A tutor on the other hand is someone who helps a student understand the material they are learning. They deliver additional, informal, or remedial instruction based on individual need. Whilst beneficial, a tutor does not usually require formal qualifications.

What exactly does a tutor do?

Tutors perform varied tasks and duties, each of which is dependant on the needs of the student. Generally, tutors assess the academic performance of students, and create study plans to bridge gaps in knowledge. To do this they present theoretical material in new, digestible ways. They follow this up with demonstrating practical aspects and applying these to memory. Tutors also work to prepare students for upcoming exams or assessments, and work with teachers and parents along the way. For more detail this please contact a tutoring service.

What qualifications do tutors need?

As tutoring is an unregulated industry in Australia, the need for specific qualifications is not mandatory. That said, proven experience in the field, qualifications therein, and industry memberships are favourable. Tertiary qualifications in education, or field of expertise are advantageous. Moreover, look for professional accreditation with the Australian Tutoring Association. And if tutoring children, ensure they have completed a working with children check.

How much does a tutor cost?

The cost of tutoring varies and is typically dependent on the level of expertise held by the tutor, the nature of learning delivery, and whether it is conducted in an individual or group setting. For the most part you can expect to pay between $40 to upwards of $150 per tutoring session. For more accurate information please contact your local tutors to obtain a quote based on your needs.

Just send them to a good school?

Hello,

Our two were attending a group tutor each week and when we moved I did some research (well googled) looking for a tutor who could come to the house and who could help with both maths and English.
I came across a site called Tutor Finder and through that Shane. Shane has been tutoring both daughter 13 and son 12 since the start of the year. He is great with them both and keeps them interested and focused and we have seen a marked improvement in both with their understanding and grades in both subjects. Our daughter has trouble focusing and is easily distracted but Shane has, through his experiences and views on learning taken an individual approach to both and it has certainly worked! His details and background can be found at – http://www.tutorfinder.com.au/tutor/shanemartin.php
Shane is $80 an hour which seems to be one of the higher amounts to pay per hour, however when I look at the fact that we were paying nearly the same amount for group tutoring (five to six kids in each group) and Shane comes to our house (always punctual too btw) I am glad we found him!
p.s. I am not a tutor and thus the reason the children have one, so by all mean RiotACTers correct my spelling and grammar mistakes in this, as I am sure there will be some 😉
