Where are the best waxing salons in Canberra? Photo: File.

Waxing is a fantastic hair removal solution that boasts many benefits over shaving – results last longer, hair becomes finer over time, you can avoid razor burn and other skin irritations, and more.

If you are looking for a reliable waxing salon in the Canberra region, you have landed in the right place. We’ve conducted a little local research and considered our readers’ feedback – now, the results are in.

In this article, discover the top four waxing salons in Canberra and surrounding areas. You’ll be smooth and silky in no time at all.

Let’s jump right into it.

What makes a great waxing salon?

Whether you are a waxing pro or total newbie, you want your go-to salon to feature the following:

  • Experienced staff. Waxing can be extremely painful – even more so if your therapist has no idea what they’re doing. Experience is a must.
  • Clean treatment rooms. Waxing can be a messy business. When you step foot into your treatment room, it should be clean, comfortable, and well-cared-for.
  • A comprehensive range of waxing services. The best salons offer a whole range of waxing services for both men and women.
  • Affordable pricing. The cost of waxing varies a lot between salons. It’s about finding a balance between service quality and affordability.
  • A relaxing atmosphere. Waxing hurts. But, in the right salon, you can indulge in a little me-time. Spa music, candles, and other finishing touches make all the difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is waxing better than shaving?

There are many pros and cons to both, and it ultimately comes down to personal preference. However, waxing is meant to be great for people with sensitive skin, as shaving can often lead to skin irritation and ingrown hairs. Waxing can also be good for managing thicker hair - since the hairs have been pulled out at the follicle, it will be harder for it to regrow, and will come through thinner and softer than before.

Is waxing painful?

Everyone has a different level of pain tolerance - some may find it quite painful, others may find it totally fine. If you're worried about the pain levels, try applying a cold compress to the area of skin before waxing, in order to numb the area slightly. And keep in mind that over time you will get used to the sensation, and it will become more bearable the more you do it.

How often do I need to get a wax?

For legs, you should probably get them waxed once every 3 to 5 weeks, depending on how fast your hair grows back and how well you want to maintain the hair.

Is a wax expensive?

If you want to do it yourself, kits can cost between $25-$100, depending on the quality of the brand. If you go to a salon - which is probably the wisest, and best way to guarantee quality results - then you can expect to pay certain individual amounts per area waxed, which can vary from salon to salon. However, remember that what you're paying for is not just the wax, but appropriate skincare, professionalism and safety.

What should I do after a waxing session?

After you have a wax, the treated area may be sensitive and irritated. Avoid hot baths and showers on the waxed skin, as this can aggravate the irritation, and try to wear soft, loose-fitting clothing. If you have any cooling gels or antiseptic creams, those can be very useful in reducing irritation and protecting the skin.

Beaute2Suit in City Walk and NBC in Garema Arcade are both good although not that cheap. If you’re in Gungahlin try Gloww upstairs from Big W. The owner (whose name escapes me) is brilliant.

Are there any more opinions on this, given the date of this thread?

Best brazillian I’ve had recently was at Essence Salon and Spa in Woden. Cost was around $60. I haven’t tried any of their other waxing services though.
It wasn’t awkward (Nothing worse than feeling awkward during this treatment!), and it was one of the more painless experiences I’ve had for that particular service.
The beautician was Brigette, whom I highly recommend.

I also would recommend Nati from Kingston ‘Created Beautiful’. She is the Brazilian and Brow queen!
Wouldn’t go anywhere else.

Personally I rather a woman who looks like she’s got an afro wig glued to the base of her belly.

Seriously, though, it’s an individual thing. There are no invalid choices. As long as it’s kept clean, I’m keen.

Beaute 2 Suit http://www.beaute2suit.com.au/ is a great beauty salon and they use high quality wax.

Just been to Beaute 2 Suit (in the city) for an eyebrow wax. Best job ever!! Cost $20 and the person there was very professional. I can’t believe that she was able to remove some hairs with tweezers without me feeling it 🙂
I’m recommending this place to everyone now, very friendly, professional & CLEAN.

Wikipedia has been a must reading last night. One of the theories of why we have a bush is to allow for cushioning during sex. Now I am thinking of Zohan the movie.

Don’t see much womanly attraction for the Sphynx look.

That said the mossus insist that the slight mono brow I have gets shaved and the eyebrows thinned.

Now that the last words are out of the way, and back on topic – I can highly recommend Michele at Elite Purity in Ngunnawal. She’s brilliant.

And just to balance the debate out play some Kate Bush too! 🙂

Mea culpa for raising it in the first place. I asked the question out of pure ignorance and mild (not morbid) interest.

But surely if anyone should have strips torn off them (pun intended) for wandering off topic (and I did wonder at the time, but I’ve seen much wider latitude allowed elsewhere), surely it should have been me @#17, not PB another 100 posts later. One or two others have had some things to say in those intervening comments too.

I’ve personally found some of the replies informative and interesting, and I’m cheered by the fact that some people here have made it clear they do it for their own comfort and other purely personal reasons. I don’t believe they should be lumped into the ‘dedicated followers of fashion/peer group pressure’ category. They’ve stated their views pretty clearly.

That’s my last word on the subject, but I will find some Brazilian tunes and songs to play on air on Friday afternoon!

The rest of us would be well advised to sit it out as it’s really nothing to do with us.

Good point, well made.

On a recent camping trip with 3 other families this discussion came up among the women of the group over late night drinks. All the husbands looked at each other rather uncomfortably, grabbed our fishing gear and left them to it.

I love my wife regardless of how she looks but I’m hardly keen to discuss her personal choices on topics like with other blokes. I also spent part of my Arts degree studying feminist issues – I know when my views are irrelevant;)

Debate it somewhere else PB.

You’re offtopic and if you don’t like that I don’t care.

Granny, I’m with you on this one … I feel very sorry for young women if they believe they must inflict such a painful & unnecessary procedure on themselves in today’s society. Viva la map of tassie!

Pommy bastard4:26 pm 02 Feb 09

The issue as far as I see it stems a lot further than just brazillian waxes and is not just about being “easily led”. It, and the other issues I lump in this basket, is about lots of things, including women being led to believe that they constantly need to cut this, tan that, dye this, tighten that just to see themselves as barely acceptable, self esteem, making money, the beauty myth. Lots of things I haven’t got the time nor the desire to go into right now.

It would appear that you do not have a high opinion of women.

johnboy said :

Then stop making comments like “you should get out more”, and indulge more in debating the topic, not the personality, or people may take you for one.

Now then John, what do you think of the comments;

It’s pornography-driven. Unfortunately, as a result, girls are pressured to get Brazilians at a ridiculously young age.\

waxing is one of the stupidities of fashion

inflicted on women

girls are made to feel like boys will go, “Ewwww” if they don’t remove their pubic hair.

girls are made to feel that they’re not good enough if they don’t have the latest fashion or beauty accessory.

you will be ridiculed if you choose not to conform

(Apart from their quasi-feminist redundancy) Do you not think thatt hey are good points to debate?

I do.

I think some of the older men here are making the terrible mistake of thinking their opinions about the private grooming decisions of younger women are any of their business.

“Ok, FC, that’s good then, proof that this isn’t a case of people being led by the nose by the fashion industry”

I think more so the beauty industry than the fashion industry PB.

“After all, you wouldn’t want to be calling those of your acquaintance “fashion victims” or “easily led”, now would you?”

“fashion victim” is a term that implies that someone has attempted to be fashionable, but failed. so doesn’t really work in the way you have used it.

After all, you wouldn’t want to be calling those of your acquaintance “fashion victims” or “easily led”, now would you?

I have the deepest of respect for young people in the 20-30 age group, and am sure they would be quite capable of making the decision whether to wax or not, off their own bat.

It’s good that there are quality facilities out there for those who choose to go down that road is there not?

the 20-30yrs age group.
And this was the norm also when I fitted into th e 15-20 yr age group.

It is wierd that it became the norm so quickly.

It seems like the close-to-40s won’t do it if you paid them, and the under 30s think it is bizarre if you don’t do it.

I think it is strange to get that up close and personal with some beautician. But each to their own…

As George Bush reportedly said when told three Brazilian soldiers were killed in Iraq: “How many are there in brazillion?”

I’m doing my bit to save the old-growth forests by not waxing.

Well, I would rather not personally. However, each to their own. As long as Gramps doesn’t drop dead leaving me suddenly and inconsiderately on the ‘meat market’ I shouldn’t have to worry too much about Brazilians … or Swedes … or Scots … or ….

: )

I’ve only had to wax once, when playing football after my knee reconstructions. I had to have extensive taping applied to my knee before each training sesion and game.

I waxed my knee once before being told about cream that provides the same end result without the need for any ‘ripping’. While I understand the wish to avoid spending considerable energy and time peeling layers of elastoplast off a hairy leg (trust me this is best done in the bath after a few beers), I can’t understand why anybody would inflcit this on their most sensitive areas.

I had a friend in school who cut all her eyelashes off.
This probably had more to do with her being a bit mad, rather than fashion.
it was pretty hilarious.

my wife was ridiculed at work by a co-worker for not having her eyebrows waxed into thin lines. She informed the other person that she hadn’t a problem with her eyebrows. She also didn’t pluck her eyelashes, they are there for a reason…

FC said :

Very well written, FC, and very brave to be so honest about something so personal.

Mme Workalot, I think most people don’t go “Oh, I’m going to be fashionable now,” it’s more like, “If I don’t shave my legs and arms I’ll be different. Kids at school will laugh at me and boys will find me unattractive.”

The reasons a mature woman may or may not choose to do something are very different from the influences that a young girl can be subjected to.

There’s a point at which anything is ok, it’s just a style and it’s personal choice and that’s fine.

But there’s also a point at which you will be ridiculed if you choose not to conform. And that’s not ok.

I have no problems whatsoever with you enjoying your Brazilian. More power to you.

I will have a problem if I’m going to have to turn up and do it myself because it will be socially unacceptable for me to do otherwise.

I’m already stuck with shaving my armpits and legs because people ridicule women who don’t, and are repulsed by their natural body hair. This is increasingly evidenced with swimsuits as well. I personally resent the pressure.

If there is going to be choice, then let it be real choice. Not choice like, “No dear, of course you don’t have to wear the corset. Of course no man will want to marry you without a sixteen inch waist, and everyone will think you’re ugly …. I know it hurts, but you’ll get used to living with chronic pain and there’s things we can do for the fainting.”

After reading this thread I would have to agree with granny (no surprises here I suppose)

I used to get a brazillian all the time, as it made me feel better about the aesthetics and feel of “down there”. however I think a lot of that was related to my idea that it is more attractive things for my partners, and therefore made me feel more attractive and comfortable with myself when in the bedroom.

For mewaxing was definitly a preferrable alternative to shaving. However the desired outcome was still to be ‘smooth and hairless’ (because this made me feel sexy, and womanly) – why – I am unsure. As when I was young, the getting of this hair was a part of what made me a woman (no longer a girl)

I stopped about 18 months ago it really has been a bit of a struggle to accept that my bits still look good and will receive attention if not bald(which they do). I actually had one former boyfriend say that he wouldn’t go down on me unless I shaved/waxed.
He quite quickly became an ex. Tho not until after he had the opportunity to eat his words. parden the pun 😉
Obviously not all men think like this, as I have come to learn, it is mainly my female friends who are shocked that I leave myelf to be as I was born to be.

the only difference I have noticed comfort wise, has been being comfortable with down there with lovers – based on the fact that it is the expected thing for most women I know to do, as has been since teenage years.

Personally, I actually find the natural look to be far more attractive and sensual, and prefer it to the bald look (which I do find as being what I call “pornographised”)and has less appeal to me.Each to their own taste I suppose.

Point taken Granny, and I concede that your quote above is highly inappropriate.

However, my comment was based purely on responses posted on this thread about why people get it done and my own personal preferences. I don’t tend to pay attention to fashion trends and really don’t know what’s hot and what’s not.

As a matter of fact, I find it highly offensive that someone would assume that I would put myself through that just to be fashionable. I’m not that shallow.

🙂

Not if you’re the only one with an unbleached anus, Mr Evil ….

Brazilians I can understand – but anus bleaching is just plain weird!

Like the following advice provided on their ‘Brazilian waxing’ page by http://www.girl.com.au, a site also marketing Disney movies and Fisher Price Smart Cycles:

“The Brazilian bikini wax is an acquired taste and is not for everyone. Some women can endure the pain while others it’s just too much to bare. For those of you interested in modeling it’s a must, but I’d recommend a lead up before you take the plunge. Brazilian waxing involves spreading hot wax your buttocks and vagina area. A cloth is patted over the wax, then pulled off. Don’t be alarmed if the waxer throws your legs over your shoulder, or asks you to moon them, this is normal and ensures there are no stray hairs. A tweezer is used for the more delicate areas (red bits). So why does it appeal. Nobody really likes hair in their private regions and it has a childlike appeal. Men love it, and are eternally curious about it.

which was removed eventually only after the media became involved.

Brazilian waxes have also been offered as competition prizes in teen magazines. Beauty therapists are also stating that Brazilian waxes are now the ‘norm’ for young girls.

I’m really not going to get involved in this, Mme Workalot. To me it is obvious. If you are curious then you know how to Google. Neither your beliefs or how you wear your hair are any of my concern.

If you believe that the beauty industry has no vested interest in normalising this procedure then that is your choice.

Gobbo is quite the inappropriate name for a (I am assuming rudely here) female, at least in this thread 🙂

Hair or no hair, I am not fussed, people are more than cosmetic to me, and I would love my wife in as many ways as I do now either way she decided to go downstairs.

Madame Workalot7:59 am 02 Feb 09

Fairytale – try Frangapani (yes, that’s how it’s spelt!) in Tuggeranong Hyperdome if you’re Southside – $50 for a Brazilian, and very good.

Granny – I think you’re sorely mistaken about people getting Brazilians for the purposes of fashion. I get it because it’s more comfortable and neater, and a hell of a lot less maintenance. I don’t think anyone on this thread has suggested they got it because it looked good.

I found my first grey pube last night, stuck in my teeth…
My wife hates me telling that joke regardless of the fact I’m grey and she’s not.

Well, someone better start swinging a bit or there won’t be much point in the Kiwi’s coming on to bat. Though with so few wickets remaining I can see why they are hesitant.

🙂

Of course.

Obviously.

Granny said :

I really don’t care what you do or don’t do, Gobbo. I care when girls are made to feel like boys will go, “Ewwww” if they don’t remove their pubic hair.

And frankly I also believe, that like eyelashes and nostril hair it probably does serve a useful purpose.

Nevertheless, I don’t care that you disagree with me. I very much care that fashion bullies people into doing unnatural things, however, and that girls are made to feel that they’re not good enough if they don’t have the latest fashion or beauty accessory.

Whether that’s a tan or a corset or a crinoline or a bustle or a lice-infested two-storied powdered wig or a Brazilian makes little difference to me.

Granny – I have seen no evidence of anyone going “Ewww” about whether or not someone has a Brazilian or not. You were the one to equate it to following fashion. I have advised of my reasons for having one, none of which were for a fashionable purpose.

Eyelashes and nostril hair do have useful purposes. However, when it comes to my pubic hair, I prefer to remove it, for the reasons I have given, not for fashion.

I am only disagreeing with your statement that Brazilian’s are fashion driven as mine is not. That, and the statement that “girls are made to feel that they’re not good enough if they don’t have the latest fashion or beauty accessory” as I haven’t seen anyone pressure anyone into having a Brazilian, even in crappy womens gossip magazines.

Have I been under a rock at my waxers for all these years?

fashion trends are never 100%

Like I said, the last woman to still have eyelashes will be considered a freak.

Granny said :

And frankly I also believe, that like eyelashes and nostril hair it probably does serve a useful purpose.

It may have served a purpose in the past where it isn’t needed now, in this part of the world at least. Although opinions are divided on what it’s purpose may be and why it has diminished over time.

Oh, so you were saying that it was a stupidity. ok.

The problem with the stupidities of fashion is that they are only ever recognised with hindsight, and usually inflicted on women.

“Inflicted on”? And there’s me thinking that she chose to do it. You learn something new every day.

The less hair you have the less this happens and you also get the bonus of less hairs in your teeth so to speak 🙂

Agreed.

On a purely visual level I don’t mind bare or trimmed, but if it is completely untamed it’s not so nice to look at but it isn’t a turn off.

Agreed again!

Anyhoo, back on topic (please!) are there no other opinions out there to posit on the pros and cons of going all eastern-South-American?

It’s a personal thing, you either like it or you don’t. I’m a bit OCD about my body hair, but don’t really care about my partners, she can do whatever makes her comfortable. However I find the more hair you have the more the sweat collects in various spots which is uncomfortable. The less hair you have the less this happens and you also get the bonus of less hairs in your teeth so to speak 🙂

The downside to waxing are the ingrowns and other fun things that happen to some peoples skin.

I’m sorry Granny, we were discussing the practice of waxing ones bits, and when you commented;

I got the impression you were referring to the practices of waxing, which my good lady indulges in. My thoughts may have been coloured by a previuos comment of yours on Brazilians in another discussion;

This is good news for the beauty industry. Tough luck for the ordinary woman mistakenly believing she could ever be good enough without the intervention of a beauty therapist, or the more pain averse among us.

I’d be interested too.

Oh dear, PB. There are as yet undiscovered tribes of pygmies in the Amazonian jungles who have had no contact with any humans outside of their mud hut villages, but they knew you were going to say that.

No, if I’d run 100m towards him, I’d have gone right through him.

Er, so to speak.

I’m sorry. I said that where? I wouldn’t know your wife from a bar of soap to comment either way.

Pommy bastard3:36 pm 01 Feb 09

Which direction? Towards him? ; )

I got propositioned by a male colleague about 20+ years ago at a work break-up party. I reckon I could have run a sub-10 second 100m at that point!

Pommy bastard3:04 pm 01 Feb 09

Methinks he doth protest too much! ; )

It’s true, it’s true! Not that there’s anything wrong with them/it, but pics of male members with plumbing bits and fish-hooks on steroids through them just ain’t my thang. Or without, come to that.

I nearly coughed up a lung reading your post, PB. Lucky I was off air at the time.

Then (and I swear I’m not making this up), a colleague here was preparing for her co-presented show (on air now) and came out to the library to review a CD of music from Brazil. I found it hard to pass comment with a straight face.

* Makes mental note to feature Brazilian music on Friday during drive-time. *

Pommy bastard: In what way?

Salient question. It’s a professionally done job, the waxer ensures the wife is comfortable throughout, to the point where she finds the experience easily endurable. (I’m typing this as she dictates.)

The waxing leaves her as desired, and with no ingrowing hairs, no rash, and no sore spots. (I can vouch for this as I always do a detailed close up examination, naturally.)

She sometimes has a “Landing strip or “Hitler’s tash” left, as the mood takes her.

The salon is very hygienic, but also has a nice ambiance.

The wife has a great relationship with the girl who waxes her, and will only see that person.

The after effects are as “Gobbo” alludes to. As the wife normally gets waxed on the morning of a day when we have the evening to ourselves, the nights, and on nights following, sexual pleasure is very much enhanced for both her and me. In fact the effect on our sexual pleasure, following waxing, is not unlike dropping a careless match into a box of firecrackers.

I do it for me.

I have had a partner who insisted I stopped due to his ‘not liking a prepubescent look”. I stopped at that point. I then used to ‘buzz-cut’ myself to make me partially happy and him more so as my snatch was not technically bald.

After we separated, I went back to my preferred grooming. 🙂

Fair enough.

I may have confused things by talking about ‘implying’ when it could well be more of an inference thing. Which is in part why I raised the question: do you do it because you want to or someone else wants you to?

A girlfriend once asked me if I would like her to get one, to which my response was, For preference, no. Do it for yourself if you like, but not for me.

Fair doos Overheard.

When you stated that it “implies you’re going for the pre-pubescent look” and P1 stated that he “never really got the pre-pubescent look”, I thought I would just add that I thought threre was a lot more difference between a pre-pubescent vagina from a matured vagina apart from the hairs. That is all. I wasn’t taking anyone to task.

Oh .. another reason I enjoy Brazilians is they make my orgasms stronger. I seem more sensitive for quite some time.

Gobbo said :

It is not pornography driven for me.

I prefer a Brazilian as it makes me feel cooler and cleaner in summer. I seem to perspire less in the crotch area which makes me happier. AND it also goes better with the scant underwear I prefer wearing.

I am surprised it only takes the removal of pubic hair to confuse some posters between a matured vagina and a pre-pubescent one?

Your second para answers my question from the owner/wearer’s perspective (for want of a better expression).

As for your last para, it might help to go back and read the above comments because noone I can see is saying what you suggest.

Can someone (male or female) please explain to me the attraction of the Brazilian? I have NEVER got it. Er, I mean, I have never understood the allure.

It’s pornography-driven. Unfortunately, as a result, girls are pressured to get Brazilians at a ridiculously young age. It seems to be the norm among a large proportion of 18-28 year olds.

As a male hetero, to me it just implies you’re going for the pre-pubescent look and that I REALLY don’t understand.

I’m serious. Pray enlighten me.

Different things different peoples boats? lol

Personally I think if the girl was hot enough, I don’t think a most guys would care either way haha..

ewwwwww….

i have had hit and miss eyebrows at faces in woden…. not too shabby at the one at narrabundah shops (cant remember the name)

by far the best i have ever had was in darwin, which helps no one, especially me.

IMO $35 for a Brazilian is too low for an operator to be using good materials and following OHS procedures like not recycling the wax.

Highly recommend Cassy at Soul’s Desire Beauty & Grooming – http://www.soulsdesire.com.au

Good price too! 😛

I go to Anna Michelle of Beauty By The Pines in Issacs. She charges about $35 for a brazilian, $12 for eyebrows. I’ve been going to her for almost three years now and she always does an awesome job. Her number is 6286 8178.

I think she has closed.

I really recommend Jedidah (that’s her name). I went to her on a stinking hot day before my wedding, when I hadn’t made a booking and all of the big names had looked down their noses at me and told me they were full. She’s wonderful! Call her on her and just arrange a time to meet at her shop upstairs across from starbucks in civic. Small Canberra business, very friendly, reasonably priced (can’t remember from top of my head but comparative) and pretty talented at what she does. It really made my day.

My better half swears by the beauty place at Brand Depot – not sure what the name is, but it is around the far side, near the “refuel lounge” (food court thingy).

I think she pays $25-30, which makes the trek out there worthwhile.

What is to be waxed ?

NAD wax is absolute crap.

1) Watch infomercial
2) Watch infomercial of NADS
3) Buy from shop
4) Nad your Nads
5) This thread is useless without pictures.

You a hot chick? I’ll do it for free.

Created Beautiful, Shop 10, Andrew Arcade, Giles Street, Kingston.

Two years I have been going there, not one ingrown hair. Natti is fastidious in ensuring nothing remains.

100% recommendation from me. It is a regular price, I guess? $60.00. But they do a proper job!

You mean “a good waxing OR a cheap one”, right?

That junky with the bucket on Northbourne will wash it, I’m not sure he’ll wax it, though.

Perhaps if you pay extra.

Otherwise Car Lovers, perhaps?
