Mumbrella reports that Betstar.com.au’s efforts to make light of the Joel Monaghan scandal have failed after outdoor advertising company Ooh Media got cold feet:

According to Ooh Media’s CEO Brendon Cook, the Betstar ad, which was created inhouse, is the sixth piece of creative work the company has had to knock back this year. The moves comes as pressure on the outdoor industry over public taste mounts with a parliamentary inquiry into the regulation of billboards under way.

“There’s a perception that anything can go up on a billboard. That’s not true,” said Cook. “This is an example of where creative work could have caused problems if our team, which is based in Melbourne, was not made aware of the context of the story.”

“But we have a process in place, and a panel of 25 people of different ages and sex that reviews creative work before it goes up,” he said.

Good taste? Or too much nannying?

I had to read it three times before I figured out the non-obscene connotation. I guess I don’t watch enough NRL (or possibly exactly the right amount).

There is a non-obscene connotation?

Too much nannying, but i dont think its funny.

It’s old news anyway.

I can see the marketing meeting now;

“You know, that’d make a great billboard, but I tell ya what, if we put it out there quietly that we made up this billboard and then decided not to go ahead with it, it might just go viral and blammo! You’ve got your name out there to possibly many more than would see one or two billboards around the city, and with none of the messy legal problems or complaints from Mr Do Gooder”

Too cynical?

Maybe, but it raises the question of how the billboard design was “leaked” to the public… I assume it was hackers and wikileaks?

But I’d say there will be better banners in the crowd when the Dogs and Raiders meet.

Come on… give us your best ones.

I would like to see some brave newspaper headlines like:
Doggies gagging for next Raiders encounter.
Raiders to get up in Doggies face.

I think it’s cleaver, but just out of interest, where were they planning on placing the sign? Whilst I know most of Canberra has heard about (and remembers) the incident, would the average punter on the street in Sydney \ Brisbane \ Melboune know the full story?

I laughed. And only rude people would get the joke so it’s a shame it wasn’t allowed to be used.
