Bicycle Justice

This story is second hand from my partner.

Monday morning aprox 7:00am my partner was driving over commonwealth bridge heading towards the city in very light traffic. There was a broken down car in the left hand lane just past the Floriade traffic lights. It had its hazard lights on but was obstructing the bike lane.

My partner changed to the middle lane to give the bicycle enough room to get around the broken down car. Once our car had passed, a look in the rear vision mirror revealed the bicycle rider hitting the bonnet of the broken down car in disgust. (like we want to break down).

The force from hitting the broken down car through the rider off balance and got the death wobbles. Another quick look in the mirror and the rider was face down on the pavement.

BICYCLE JUSTICE!!!! HA HA HA!!!!

Now, Mr Gillespie/aka Captain RAAF until proven otherwise, promise not to throw all your toys out of the pram like you did last time you were here…

I generally use the transit lane on Adelaide Ave twice each day, with 2 of us in the car. Personally, I love it.

I often see cars driving slowly in traffic with 2 or more people in them – makes me wonder whether they want to go slow or just don’t know the rules.

Quote – People have died from riding their bikes on roads I mean look what happened near Tharwa earlier this year

Well mate – that’s because some lousy bloody car driver just ran over the couple and killed him. Broad daylight, straight road… think about it! Maybe ban all blody crappy car drivers.

So because they were on the road, the husband should’ve expected to be killed…? Show some respect to the family please.

Curious

I saw the exact incident described and the cyclist didn’t fall off at all (no, it wasn’t me). I’m calling bollocks on the story

Really, only one cyclist road past while the car was broken down?

Only 1 I saw undertaking the actions as described by the OP.

Pray tell?

I did

I’m certainly not gonna dispute that my friend.

But driving into Canberra from NSW my experience is that at least 30% – 40% of ACT drivers don’t know how to adhere to the speed limit and close to 100% can’t emabrace the simple concept of merging!!!

I’ve heard it’s not true unless there are photos…

The thing about transit lanes is that they mainly serve to highlight the massive majority of people who commute without any passengers. The one on Adelaide Ave is seriously underused, even when the other lanes are moving slowly.

Could also be that a lot of people are unaware of the rules, I suppose.

Shame he didn’t want to slow down and let me catch up, I would have done more than bash on his bonnet.

It’s a two way street.

That cyclist was obviously a tool but don’t think for a second that it is limited to just those who ride bikes. That was one individual.

From my experience on Canberra roads there are more w@nkers behind the wheels of cars…

That’s stupid. Fining people for having less than 2 people in their vehicle, and you wonder why people complain about revenue-raising. This is pretty weak compared to genuine SAFETY issues……

Transit lanes have nothing to do with revenue raising. In fact they are about the only way I can think of which the government uses to encourage people to use cars less which isn’t revenue raising.

It encourages sharing because you’ll wait in traffic less, and doesn’t really punish people who are on their own. Compare this to parking costs, rego fees, and other proposed measures like congestion charges.

Cars containing two or more people are allowed in that lane as well. It’s on the sign.

You can’t park within 2 miles of anywhere in Civic without having to pay through the nose or pay through the nose.

(Anyway, I’m getting a bit off-topic here, sorry).

You sure are… that’s non sequitur, the fine would be for using the T2 lane incorrectly NOT for having one person in the car. If you want to use the T2 lane, give a friend a lift. If everyone did this, imagine how many less cars in Civic and more parking there might be.

Far more people die driving in cars on our roads. BAN ALL CARS FROM ROADS NOW!

Now back on topic: there should be no bikes allowed to ride on roads. It is as simple as that. Building “green” lanes and cycle lanes is a ridiculous abuse of the public purse. People have died from riding their bikes on roads I mean look what happened near Tharwa earlier this year!

Prey tell……..

What was she fined for? Using the “T2” (bus) lane??? I have lost count of the number of cars I have seen using the bus lane, and wished the cops would catch them. And that is on a GOOD day! I thought only buses, motorcycles and taxis were allowed to use that lane?¿?

Territory and Municipal Services Media Release says
“We recognise that there will be an increased amount of traffic on Canberra’s roads. To assist in the reduction of traffic congestion the bus lane on Adelaide Avenue will also become a T2 Transit lane. This will allow vehicles containing two or more persons to use the Transit lane.

Pays to know the road rules before you comment doesn’t it…

“Transit lanes (also known as T2 or T3 lanes) are in place to provide improved travel for buses, taxis and other vehicles carrying multiple occupants. They can also be used by emergency vehicles, motorcycles and bicycles.”

“T2 lanes can be used by vehicles if there are two or more people in the vehicle”

Cars containing two or more people are allowed in that lane as well. It’s on the sign.

A (not so) similar story of cosmic justice happened to me last year when the police were doing vehicle checks out the front of the lodge at 4:45 in the afteroon. Traffic was well banked up around The House and one impatient woman decided to jump into the T2 lane, without knowing the cops were just around the bend. She managed to get back into the normal traffic lanes, but not before Mr Plod saw her and took her out of the line for a nice fine. I cruised past laughing. It was a good afternon. 🙂

harrassing cyclists is not funny but this is!!!!

Through? My bad…..sorry

Or it was the Fonz, and it worked for jukeboxes, so he was just trying to get the car started again. Falling off was most probably then due to the crosswind from getting near the bridge. His hair was fine. Ey!!!

Hahhahahahahahaha classic story though lol funny.

ROFL – stupid MOFO!!! He/she got what they deserved!!

Ha ha! Nice one. Arrogant bloody cyclists!

Like the time a friend of mine was forced into the gutter by a car driver who was annoyed at her (don’t know why). HA HA HA! Served her bloody right!

Or the time I was abused by drunken dickheads and when I mouted the pavement to avoid them they mounted the pavement too and chased me round the block. HA HA HA! Served me bloody right!

Or the time I was buzzed twice in the space of 15 minutes because I was wearing a high-vis shirt. HA HA HA! Served me bloody right!
