The ACT Government have committed to a three year deal with the ANU’s arts community outreach program starting from January the 1st next year. They are promising $1.6 million in annual funding to the program.
ACT Arts Minister Joy Burch said the ANU School of Music, ANU School of Art, artsACT and Education and Training Directorate have been working in partnership over the last few months to review its current programs offered through the ANU Community Outreach Program, and have revised the program to better align it with the ACT Arts Policy Framework which was released last year.
“The ACT Government has always had a productive and mutually beneficial relationship with the ANU School of Music and ANU School of Art, and it is anticipated that the revised program will increase community participation levels, arts activity and professional development opportunities,” Ms Burch said.
The new Program will see additional resources put into the music in schools programs delivered through the Community Outreach Program, with a focus on increasing participation.
“Funding for the Music Education program will increase from $278,000 a year to $400,000. The program currently reaches 6,000 students, 120 teachers and 28 schools and it is anticipated that increased funding to this program will boost participation numbers to approximately 10,000 students across ACT schools.
“Also, the successful Music Development program which provides ensemble rehearsal and performance opportunities (formerly named the Music for Secondary School program) will be retained and will expand its outreach to students of all ages.”

“Over the last seven years, the CSO has been dramatically transformed into one of the most exciting and engaging orchestras in the country. This extra funding will enable us to extend our already substantial outreach program more broadly into the community,” Air Chief Marshal Houston, AC, AFC (Ret’d) said.
Ms Burch said the new funding would enhance the $471,500 currently provided to the CSO by the ACT Government.
The CSO is committed to delivering a diverse range of opportunities for musical engagement from classical concerts and free music education programs for students to outreach concerts for the disadvantaged.
“The CSO is a highly valued musical organisation in the ACT and provides many wonderful opportunities for a wide range of our community to experience music,” Ms Burch said.
Chief Conductor and Artistic Director Dr Nicholas Milton said he was delighted that the hard work of the CSO musicians and staff had been recognised.
“We are all passionate about bringing the joy of music to our community and this funding allows us to enhance the community programs already run by the CSO,” Dr Milton said.
