Climate Change Canberra are throwing a Solar BBQ to celebrate 19,000 Canberran homes using solar panels, and to answer questions for anyone still on the fence about making the move to solar power.

The press released doesn’t state whether the barbecue itself will be solar powered, but I hope so because that would be awesome.

Sunday April 7th. 12.00 -3pm
Expert speakers on Solar Energy in Canberra
BBQ, Music
The BBQ will be in the gardens opposite 15 Hackett Gardens, Turner.
Have you got solar panels or are contemplating it?
This is a chance to ask questions about joining the solar future.
All are welcome to hear about the latest progress in solar for Canberrans from speakers including:

Professor Andrew Blakers: Director of the Centre for Sustainable Energy Systems at ANU
Lawrence McIntosh: Co-ordinator of the Canberra Clean Energy who are about to launch a community solar farm that you can co-own.
MC: Caroline LeCouteur
Please bring some food to share [vegetarian preferred]. BBQ equipment provided.
Vegetarian food is available for $5.
RSVP: Valerie 62486873. If you forget to RSVP and just turn up that’s ok too.
Hope to see you there. Please do bring your family and friends.

Vegetarianism (or worse, veganism) specifically for the sake of the climate impacts of you nutritional source is ignoring the most important things if we have any chance of actually changing the current course.

There is no single ready to go solution to all these problems – solar can’t replace all other energy sources any more then coal could – saying meat bad, vegies good is equally off the planet.

A mix of energy sources/food sources/other resources are needed to support the human population of the world – the trick is to use the least damaging where possible and to price those things in a way which reflects the cost to the system rather then the subset of the cost which affects the seller.

Tofu is only good when in a laksa with seafood, chicken and pork.

If it was just me and a bunch of cows and sheep, climate change wouldn’t be an issue.

It is population that is the driver of everything.

Vegetarianism, Veganism, Carbon Tax or Direct Action, all are a waste of time if we don’t exert some control on population growth.

All the climate change apologists who have been sledging ‘climate change skeptics’ should not be sledging these people. Is it not the case that meat production has a vastly greater carbon footprint than vegetarian food production? Take your pick climate change believers: you’re either interested in addressing climate change holistically, or you can shut up.

Substitute ‘normal people’ for ‘climate change apologists’ and ‘deniers’ for ‘skeptics’ and you have the basis for a cogent argument.

Ah no.
There are many farming methods which can produce meat without the massive carbon emissions of the high output, mass produced and grainfed meat industry. Definitely not at the level or cost that we currently consume though but that’s OK, because products should be priced at their true cost, including environmental costs.

Even then I believe (although ill have to check the numbers), agriculture is 15% of our total emissions and stock animals are about 10%. The majority of our emissions come from energy production and transport.

There is no disconnect between eating meat and believing in adressing man made climate change.

I don’t really give a rats about all that. But specifying [vegetarian preferred] when asking people to bring food to a barby in Australia is inherently funny and guaranteed to inspire ridicule among most readers. It’s even funnier because those earnest and serious people who did the specifying probably don’t even realise why it’s funny, and we all understand that as well.

Beer and tofu. Tofu and beer.

Puke! Steak and Shiraz!

Well, quite honestly, I could lose anything non-alcoholic.

Dear god are they trying to reduce support for solar power?

My thoughts exactly. Tofu just ain’t chicken. Or beef. Or lamb. Or anything, really.

I don’t think so, otherwise they wouldn’t hold a big barbecue to promote it. You may wish to re-read the article: it says they are ‘celebrating’ 19 000 Canberran homes using solar. That really doesn’t fit with reducing support.

I think Chewy meant that the vegetarian food may not be a big drawcard… What’s a barbecue without burnt meat and sunburn?

Beer and tofu. Tofu and beer.

And not necessarily in that order!

You don’t make friends with salad.

Umm. The release says the BBQ will be opposite 15 Hackett Gardens in Turner, so shouldn’t the headline read “Big solar BBQ in Turner”?

Well I just ordered a 5kw solar system for my place and I’m not even a green lol. I wasn’t thinking of the environment by ordering these I just thought it made sense having a big ball of nuclear fusion in the sky above might as well use it.

A vegetarian BBQ?

Dear god are they trying to reduce support for solar power?

I would expect that the BBQ will be one of those parabolic relector jobies. You can gets smallish ones for a reasonable price, I’m sure someone in the group has knocked up a huge one.

WTF? Biased toward what? Solar power?

“Please bring some food to share [vegetarian preferred]. BBQ equipment provided.”

So is the BBQ a solar job as well ?

I’m sure it’ll be an unbiased affair.
