A crack team of slightly hungover Rioters descended on the War Memorial’s annex in Mitchell for their semi occasional open day.

What can we say, there’s a lot of stuff in there. For war-porn nerds there’s endless fun to be had guessing at what particular items may have been used for and sometimes there’s even a tag or sign to conclude the argument.

Crowd levels were about right with only occasional moments of congestion, and a sausage sizzle was doing a roaring trade.

A bit of a must for history buffs if you haven’t been.

Slideshow below, knock yourselves out identifying the more arcane items.

I was there too! I have also had the privillage of going through the National museum sheds near by, the stuff in there is amazing!

The WW1 aircraft were my favourite. Walking in the door, round the corner and seeing an SE5A was a real buzz.

Very glad they have these open days

war-porn: you said it!

It was great to see the hidden items that don’t make the halls at the AWM.

It was a pity that the LAV25 was tucked away around a corner where you couldn’t get near it. But it was great to see the Albatross and the Pfalz, the 2 Centurions and all the miscellaneous bits and bobs on the racking.

Being a war-porn nerd, I think I bored mrs Neanderthalis half to death with my running commentary.

I was particularly taken by the fine set of industrial scales plonked in front of the Tiger Moth and C-47 Dakota!

Surely the Annex staff could use a bit of commonsense and not plonk that kind of stuff right in front of the exhibits that people might like to get photos of?

Apart from that little whinge, I enjoyed the afternoon: they really do have some wonderful stuff in storage there.

I was only slightly dissapointed when i noticed the first bomb disposal robot in the world (Aussie invention) was tucked up in the top corner of the racks. It should really have been closer to the floor so more people could see it. Other than that it was a great day.

That WWII Compaq Prolinea (in original box!) is certainly well preserved…

Personal fave for me is the Goliath Tracked Mine sitting on a shelf.

Wow!!! Great photo’s.
I was going to go but was still intoxicated – you made me feel as though I was there!

Fanx!

beaut pictures.
