"Big Things" on this Saturday

The War Memorial seems to be doing a good job keeping their best kept secret – well – secret.

This Saturday they have their annual “Big Things” open day at their Mitchell stores.

This is well worth taking the kids to – two big sheds chockko with everything from the two German V2 missiles (one pre-restoration, one in good nick) to planes, choppers, tanks, parts of ships, armaments by the wall-load – all right up close and personal. To get an idea, I found this photo collection on Picasa.

The event description on the AWM website is quite brief: Saturday 16, 12-4, coin donation, obligatory sausage sizzle, closed flat footwear, no tripods or large bags, Callan Street Mitchell.

The tripods bit is unfortunate because the light level is fairly low, so will make taking decent photos hard.

I’d also suggest warm clothing – these are just big sheds, plus some of the stuff is outside.

Don’t bother trying to catch the bus there, ACTION have closed the nearby bus stops on Vicars St…

I went to this part of the AWM a couple of years ago and found it quite interesting.

Was my first post chef trade job so I was quite into the taking all breaks that I am entitled to – after working 50 hour weeks for 7 years at a pinnacle of 38,000 a year.

Anyway thats enough about me…. That string tripod looks interesting but would benefit from one point of anchor on the ground (Your foot) to many points on the camera (4 or so one for each corner ?) that could be an enhancement on current design.

Yes its a quiet work day – but my boss said take the good while you can “Theres a storm coming”

Was a good place to get away from it all between work requests and have a quiet legs up on a desk relax.

Your tax dollars at work…

hahah just get a small friend to stand still while you use him as a stand.

Great earning potential for a midget wearing a mortarboard?

Ha, I was just about to post the same thing
Different instructions though.

They are great.

Depends what your storing…

When I worked at archives, they had a cold storage room for print and film media

If I remember correctly which I probably do not it was about 3 degrees. We had to wear cool room suits like eskimos and could not work more than 30 consecutive minutes in there. Was a good place to get away from it all between work requests and have a quiet legs up on a desk relax.

I think its more about relative humidity with old relic environments as its the moisture that destroys things, not the temperature.

As always – happy to be proven wrong.

Or this solution: http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/prod3447.htm
Gets you funny looks at the airport Xrays too!

“I’d also suggest warm clothing – these are just big sheds, plus some of the stuff is outside.”

Actually, it usually isn’t that cold inside as I think they try to keep the building at around 20C all year around to keep the air moisture free.

I think the reason for banning tripods is because there isn’t alot of space to move around some of the exhibits, and someone with a tripod will probably block the traffic flow.

RE: Tripods

For the camera-inclined, for a cheap and dodgy replacement to a tri\bi\monopod where you’re not allowed one…
(Yes, I know its not perfect, but when you can’t get one in it can be the difference between a slightly jittery shot and a hugely jittery shot)

Total cost should be around $2, and it will fit in your pocket.
Be sure to overlength your down-string though, so you can put double pressure on it by using both feet as shown at the very bottom of the page.

oh awesome – I’ve got 2 exchange students coming down this weekend.

Was my saturday arvo sorted till the no tripods part… what a farce… oh well ill have to line up a speccie tour…
