There’s a strong school of thought that the establishment of an independent Air Force was the biggest mistake in the history of Australian Defence.
But it’s turning 88 today and they’re having a celebration.
So they’re warning the community that they’re going to be lighting up the skies over Canberra at 11am.
- Details of Canberra events:
31 March 2009 7:00am:
The RAAF Ensign will be raised at Regatta Point. The RAAF Ensign signifies the bond of service and is flown at all Air Force establishments and paraded at ceremonies.
Weather permitting, the RAAF Hot Air Balloon will fly over the flag raising ceremony.
31 March 2009 11:00am:
A commemorative service will be held at the RAAF Memorial Grove (corner of Federal Hwy and Majura Rd, adjacent to the Hughie Edwards VC rest stop). The service will begin with a flypast of two F/A-18 Hornet fighters from RAAF Base Williamtown.
After conducting a flypast of the commemorative service, the F/A-18 Hornets will fly over the Australian Defence Force Academy; Lake Burley Griffin, past the Royal Australian Air Force Ensign at Regatta Point; the Australian National Museum; Parliament House; ANZAC Parade; and the Australian War Memorial before returning to RAAF Base Williamtown.
So, as usual, don’t panic.
