This is going to be another one of those ‘What/Who do you recommend posts’ but I don’t care, I seriously want to know. I am an ex, very serious bike rider (Jap Sports Bikes) who has just got back into riding after 8 years without a bike. Maybe i’m going through a mid life crisis early (i’m 34), maybe i’ve just never grown up, who knows?. But, I’ve just bought what in my day was a serious bike, a ZX6r Ninja and am looking for fellow enthusiasts to ride with.

I’m too young for the Ulysses club and a bit too old for any boy racer clubs who like to show off. All my ex riding buddies have grown up, got married, had kids and no longer ride. I don’t have the confidence I once had and am no longer crazy/stupid enough to have the front wheel in the air the full length of Northbourne from Ipima to London Circuit or see how high I can get the back wheel off the ground (although the boy inside still thinks that’s cool, I could tell you some stories).

I am looking for a group/club or bunch of blokes/gals/enthusiasts, that enjoys bikes and bike riding, has occasional weekend rides out to the Cotter ect, is not too serious and is very social. I don’t think there is much in the way of this kind of club in Canberra and if anyone can recommend one i’d be happy to check them out.

Even if you have no idea, but ride bikes and are keen to get together for the odd ride and a bit of fun then let me know. I m planning to take my new toy out for some fun to the Cotter this weekend and some company would be good.

Suggestions?

There’s a shed load of clubs around that you can ride with and there are places in and around the ACT to have fun. If you are a borne again biker like many of us are then log on to the Stay Upright website and book in for the MASTERS course, subsidised by the MRA ACT to the tune of 50%. There’s a course on the the 11th so act fast they may have a vacancy. I’m the past president of the MRA ACT and riders are always welcome to come on any MRA ACT ride member or not. Those that know me know that I tend to enjoy my riding at a spirited pace and I wouldn’t be using the Cotter as any form of self testing circuit. I say there are Saturday and Sunday suicide riders out their, 4WDs that spend more time on your side of the road than theirs, forest litter, road crap, critters and fellow riders slicing and dicing. If you want have a push then head up to Wakefield they have great ride days where you can really push your limits, I take my Duke up there whenever I can. But get along to the MASTERS, find out what you have forgotten or wasn’t taught then get onto the Canberra Riders, MRA ACT or any of the other clubs and start living bikes again.
Ride Safe and have fun,
Pete
PS drop me a line pete74au@yahoo.com.au and I’ll put you onto the MRA yahoo chat group and you can tee up your own rides.

have a look at netrider.net.au

they organize a few events in Canberra (the website is based out of melbourne) but they still have quite a big contingent up here.

Careful now. Double demerits this weekend

I have the club for you… Motorcycle Riders Association of ACT
http://www.mraact.org.au

It’s $20 a year to be a member of the association.

Anyone is welcome to join in on MRA ACT events.

One of the rides which happens once to twice a month is the discovery rides -the discovery rides are tailored to the needs of the group and is paced at the speed of the slowest rider. It is ideal for learner riders and people returning to riding, The ride promotes roadcraft and rider safety and is taken place in Canberra and the Surrounding areas and is usually decided on the day. The next ride is this Saturday 4th October meeting at 0930 at Robbos in Fyshwick for a 1000 departure.

The next one after that will be on the 25th October and will be a longer ride down the Batemans bay for lunch by the water at the Starfish cafe. Forming up at Robbos Fyshwick at 0900 for a 0930 departure. Heading to braidwood then onto the bay.

There is also usually a social ride which is usually a day worth of riding and sometimes can be an overnighter.

Also don’t forget the Pink Ribbon Ride on 19th October which is being organised by Girls on The Move. Starting at Old Parliament House at 0830 for registration – it will cost you $10 and includes 2 x raffle tickets and a pink ribbon wrist band. Departure at 1000 to weston park in yarralumla.

Also http://www.canberrariders.org.au is good for the occasional ride and other things biking!

http://www.canberrariders.org.au has a get together at tillys every monday (normally 6pm but 4pm on public hols because they shut early) and people on there organise rides most weekends

A bloke at work is in much the same situation (in fact I thought it was him posting the item).

How does he contact you?

My hubby has ridden a few times with a group called Fat Bastards. Even if you’re not fat I think you can still be a junior member 🙂

A guy at work is an active member of some web forum for motorbike riders. “Canberra Rider” I believe (he’s away, so I can’t check with him). It’s an online forum & they seem to meet up for rides also.
