Bike cage uptake less than enthusiastic

belconnen bike cage

Last month we marvelled at the Bike>Park>Ride cages being installed at bus facilities at some expense.

This morning Danni sent in the above photo with this comment:

Took this photo on friday afternoon. Since the grand opening of the bike shed at the new “not an interchange” several weeks ago, we have not seen a single bike in it. Some have suggested it would serve better as a drop off point for trolleys, for people catching the bus (note trolleys at mid LHS of picture).

I just found this old post. I was planning to use the Belconnen Bike Cage to park my bike when I ride down from Spence to shop at the Mall. I know there are racks at the front of the mall that I could lock my bike to, but I would not want to come back from my shopping to find the bike vandalised or various fittings and accessories gone, or even the entire bike if a thief was equipped with bold cutters.

My question is if people are now using the Bike Storage facilities and are happy with the ease of use and security of their bikes in it.

I tried to access the one at Belconnen the other day and my MyWay card didn’t work so it looks like there is a separate card required or an extra level of registration on top of my basic registration.

This is a fairly cheap option compared to Car park and ride ,for the cost of the Mawson car park and ride you are able to install more bike parking facilities across a wider area. This is what we call integrated transport. This types of facilities are common in the Netherlands ,Denmark,Japan ,Sweden ,Germany ,etc.. As Canberra is spread out but designed as a transit city ,having facilities like these gives many people options.I would say poor pathway connections and lighting may be the reason for the slow uptake not to mention our very low bicycle use is at just 2.7%.Why not give it a go!

Is this another example of the power of Pedal Power wasting more tax payer dollars?

Almost every instance of architecture used on Action stops, interchanges etc in the last ten years has been an epic fail.

Shelters that dont provide any. Bike cages with no bikes. Glass bus stops that invite vandalism.

Im convinced that just like the actual network planning, the interchanges and shelters are designed by people who never use public transport.

Or potential overflow accomodation for the Hume Hilton.

It can be both. Work experience for detainees and discounted child care – what could possibly go wrong?

To be fair, it hasn’t been operating that long, and you do need to register I think. In any case, it’ll take a huge change in mindset for normal people to start pedaling to the bus stop. Plus, you need a special type of beater bike that is reliable yet you don’t mind getting slightly damaged in a communal cage.

There are only two cage sites I think, but many more locker sites. There are lockers at Gungahlin.

I would’ve mistaken this as a street art if I didn’t know better…

Looks pretty (in someone’s eyes), costs the ACT taxpayers money, while providing no practical benefit.

What I find laughable are the bike tethering hoops being installed at bus stops right across the ACT. Who in their right mind would leave their bike chained up in the middle of suburbia all day for vandals and thieves? My bike is only a moderately priced bit of kit, but there’s no way I’d risk leaving it at my local bus stop all day.

When they built a bike shed at our school (at considerable cost), the bottom rail of the security mesh was high enough to allow kids to slide under… at least this one looks better-built… It gets much better use 😉

Or a ‘bird’ cage even. Sorry just can’t stop reading bird for bike.

Going past the cage on Flemington Road each day it too has been devoid of any bicycles since its creation
