Bike lanes are confusing

Bike Lane

Ladies and gentlemen Aeek has wonderfully demonstrated why I ride on the footpath most of the time:

This is the eastern end of Aranda. The bike lane ends without any sign and now this sign without any bike lane.

Well one of the reasons…

Lane Bike

Mainly it’s because I’m a big scaredy cat.

I agree this is trolling but far too many people on the road ACTUALLY think this way – the other day I was riding on the road and a parked car pulled out from the kerb while I was passing, w/o indicating, almost drove right into me! driver then honked ME and gave me the finger! i get that cyclists need to be careful and that everyone makes mistakes, but the nerve of this person to berate me for being on the road when they almost caused an accident was unbelievable.

Little do these same people know that pedestrians crossing the driveway also have the right of way too!

The last time I checked the road was for motorised vehicles.

Pushbike riders get off the road. You are either fools or you have a death wish.

Obvious troll is obvious.

You need to check again.

You have no idea of the road rules. I hope you don’t pretend to have a license because you clearly don’t deserve one.

As Holden Caufield said they haven’t finished the markings. The solid line is melted onto the road, they then come along later and spray the dashed lines.

Now that said if I recall this road was resurfaced quite a while ago, and frankly as parking is allowed and the road is wide really shouldn’t need a separate lane anyway, except for either side of intersections. (Something that was discussed in a thread in the last 2 weeks or so).

Took a close look on my way home. Looks like an end-of-line mark near the Bike Lane sign. Suspect this is as much to keep the fire access gate clear (visible behind the trailer).

Agree, no need for a bike lane on this wide road, plenty of space for everyone even with the occasional parking.

The trailer is interesting, normally it is parked on the road.

If you find that confusing, you’ve got bigger issues.
Just keep riding! Do you really need a damn line painted there?

Please remember that these lane markings have been provided because the cycling community believe they are entitled to ride the roads like cars.

Yes that is the law, the roads belong to us all.

I would use a bike path if there was one between my home and the local shops, my work, the town centre.

My elderly father has difficulty with traffic so he now no longer rides or drives and he uses the buses. We are lucky to have such wonderful range of options here in Canberra.

I agree– if you don’t like cycling on the roads because the line markings are not to standard, use the bike path network that has been long available to cyclists.

Is it simply a matter of the line markings not being completed?

It looks like you can see small paint marks indicating where the cycle lane should continue. It also looks like a newly laid road surface, super smooth hotmix to boot! So maybe the council workers are coming back or the linemarkers just knocked off early???

Barcham is braver than I am. I am terrified of that footpath, hard up against the hedge line making every driveway blind. I much prefer the wide road with good visibility.

Also demonstrating why I hate riding on the footpath a lot of the time, some pruning and edging work required there.

Only thing missing is that trailer being parked a metre or so to the left.
