Bill to block anti-abortion protests

Anti-abortion protests will be banned outside ACT abortion clinics after government MLAs rejected Liberal amendments to a Greens bill on exclusion zones in such scenarios.

Labor MLAs will support a Greens bill that would secure exclusions zones around abortion clinics; despite the Liberals submitting a proposal that removes critical parts of the legislation, according to Minister of Health Simon Corbell.

“People requiring legal medical treatment, no matter what it is, should be able to get that treatment in privacy and safety,” Mr Corbell said.

“The termination of a pregnancy is legal in the ACT and if protestors want to undertake in political activism through peaceful assembly then they should bring that activism to their political representatives, not to individuals seeking legal medical services.”

The bill, proposed by Greens MLA Shane Rattenbury, would prevent protestors on congregating on footpaths and streets, near a clinic such as the ACT Health building in the city.

In March, Canberra and Goulburn’s Catholic Archbishop Christopher Prowse led a prayer vigil outside the clinic, and the proposed bill aims to stop such activities. These activities and protests can have a negative mental health impact, and can cause distress and intimidation, as previously reported by women accessing these health services, a statement from Mr Corbell’s office said.

The Liberals’ amendments would have allowed protests to continue directly outside the abortion clinics. The section of the proposed bill the Canberra Liberals want removed specifies that prohibited behaviour in a protected area around an approved medical facility includes, “a protest, by any means, in the protected period in relation to the provision of abortions in the approved medical facility”.

The bans roll on.

Chocolate is now banned from ACT public servants.
No longer allowed to have chocolate fundraisers.

Fun police in action. Staff no longer allowed to decide whats good for them.
Which is interesting as these are the people chosen to make decisions for us yet they arent trusted over what to put in their mouth.

Right, so if the right-wingers decided to ban protests *they* don’t like, like…say…

http://www.al-act.org/news-events/current/77-parkwood-eggs-vigil

…you’d be OK with that?

The fact of the matter is that the anti-abortion protesters are not engaged in politics, so they don’t target politicians – they believe that they can save lives by convincing people of the humanity of the unborn babies that are being killed at this clinic.
They are (or *were*, before our politicians introduced this profoundly disturbing and anti-democratic legislation) as entitled to protest in a public space as anybody else should be.

The difference here is that the protest isnt targetting the politicians who could make a change, but desperately targetting the people using the service. If it was a sporadic protest at the clinic, I’d be ok with it. Realistically its the same protestors, same place, mon-fri. If its not harassment its stalking.
These people should go out and get jobs.

so why are there so many people who claim to be abortion survivors?

you know its very hard to prove that something doesnt exist. i doubt a video could do it.

Because since virtually everyone now carries a camera they cannot claim to have been kidnapped by aliens.

Yay, what a win for free speech.

I will defend your right to say what you wish. Well unless I disagree with you, in which case I’m going to have you banned from saying it wherever and whenever I wish.

Signed,
The Greens.

If people want to protest against abortion at Garema Place or Parliament House, they should go ahead. Doing it outside an abortion clinic, and targeting women on their way in, is harassment. Not cool.

Standing outside a building and praying is harrassment now?

You’ll get yourself into a very tight corner, very quickly if you want to start limiting protests to places and times of your own choosing without extremely (and I mean Extremely) good reasons.

I was in Melbourne a few months ago when protests closed down the centre of the city, I felt very harrassed not being able to go about my peaceful business in public. People were yelling and abusing others, horrible stuff. Perhaps they should be banned too? I’m sure you’re on board right?

Good point. Let’s ban all protests where someone can invoke the “I feel harassed’ clause.

An interesting question was raised by the anti abortionists which I’ve never seen answered.
There are cases where abortion fails and a live baby is born. Yet most of the time the baby dies due to illegally withholding medical care.

Would such a protest be banned as it would not be protesting abortion but the letting die of otherwise healthy babies. In some cases the child is killed after birth.

Like wise for the scandal recently in the US where the abortion agency was illegally selling baby parts.

These issues aren’t anti abortion.. but still heavily protested on.

The scandal in the US never happened. I recommend you watch a great video online of Trevor Noah of the Daily Show which mentions it in a story about the hypocrisy of the pro-lifers and gun regulations.

Could be worse. They might be stockpiling ice picks.

It’s a vexed issue. Most people wouldn’t condone ‘termination’ just before birth (i.e. at 8 months), but termination is OK at some fairly arbitrary point before that.

A certain percentage of the population believe that life begins at conception, and that therefore terminating any fetus is terminating a life. Thus from their point of view, they are genuinely trying to protect an innocent life from being terminated. I’m sure the belief is heartfelt. If I believed it, I would probably be protesting too.

In 2011 Ratenbury condoned protesters trespassing and destroying GMO trials in the ACT. These protesters claimed they were ‘protecting their families’ *

Seems that protests are OK so long as they are the ‘correct’ protests.

😀 Five minutes googling would have put that furphy to bed. What is it with the regressives and making up stories?
