Joy Burch has announced a review for the troubled Bimberi youth detention centre, which has been in operation now for two years.

Ms Burch said the Department of Disability, Housing and Community Services had engaged
the services of Daniel O’Neil, Director of Youth Services with Richmond Fellowship, to work
with both the staff and the young people during the period to review the quality of services and
identify any opportunities for improvement.

The review will commence in January and be accompanied by a range of immediate changes
to communication practices between management and staff, staff and young people, and
between government agencies to create regular opportunities for staff feedback and input into
planning and systems development at Bimberi, and strengthen existing complaint
mechanisms.

“These measures have been considered for some time and reflect that Bimberi has now been
operating for two years, and that we have a stronger sense of the residents and staff’s needs,”
Ms Burch said.

Here’s hoping.

Tody’s CT had something about the names Burch was alleged to have called the inmates – something about little b******s. This is an allegation Burch denies. Any chances there’ll be an inquiry into that?
