BioShock Canberra

For those interested in computer games the game BioShock is just about to be released and comes from Canberras own Irrational Games, which has just become 2K Australia according to this announcement. So if after you pick up the game and start going through their “story-driven, genre defining game” and find its rubbish you can go bang on their door give them a piece of your mind. Or if they live upto their past performances you can go give them a hearty well done.

I wonder if they have any games available for review (hint, hint).

I was in a Canberra-developed computer game in the late 90s. I played a psychopathic chef in a base on Mars, or something. I killed aliens. Too bad the game was a piece-of-crap X-Com: UFO Defence wannabe.

Dante – from what I gather, Canberra had plenty to do with Bioshock. The work was spread across both offices. The playtesting was probably done in the US, as the US market is where the money is.

I’m pretty sure the Canberra office didn’t have a whole lot to do with Bioshock.. it’s mainly been made by Irrational’s Boston office (now becoming 2K Boston). I’ve been scouting for game tester jobs and haven’t seen anything come up this way.. assuming the majority of dev would be done with US consoles, so they’d be incompatible with Aussie ones. They did Freedom Force though (I got a special thanks in the credits!)

[For che who can’t comment from work :p]

Just read in the Age that sales of games has just passed the $1 billion mark. We’ve either got too much money, too much time, game prices have gone up far too much or we’re becoming more hard core nerdy, yay.

I know will be one of the spotty fan-boys lined up outside EB come the big day…

A friend of mine has laboured long and hard on this sucker as a programming lead. From what I’ve seen in demos it looks bloody brilliant. If it’s one tenth as good as System Shock II (the Irrational game it is the “spiritual successor” of) it should be incredible.

Get out there and buy damn you all! Support the Canberra economy! Justify the 80+ hour weeks my friend has been working for months now!

I’m all revved up to give the demo a beating this very evening!

Upgrading my brothers machine on the weekend as well. Looks to be a good gaming Spring. Hooray!

Wow, Irrational used to have office two buildings away from where I work now. I feel all celebrity struck.
