If you can pick your way through the construction site that is the parliamentary triangle you might see an interesting addition to one of Canberra’s better known pieces of public art.

“Diamonds” replaced the much loved suspended globe at the National Gallery after lightning eliminated that earlier work. It’s never been quite as striking, I suspect the harsh geometry draws attention to the suspension wires which kind of kill the magic.

In any event enterprising birds have taken up residence.

It will take an enterprising cat to get them there.

Wasn’t this reported in the Canberra Times quite a while ago? Or the Chronicle? Or the City News or something?

“Along with the OHS issues associated with dealing with birds trying to protect thier young.”

Cool! We have vicious vultures nesting at the NGA. Or do we just have a nanny state?

I’ll need to rig up some sort of flamethrower. Thanks!

Anyone how do you get rid of Indian Mynah birds? They are nesting in a tree at my house and I heard they scare off the native birds. Bloody pests.

What birds are they? Not Indian Mynahs?

Apparently it’s going to cost at least $10, 000 to get them out because of the size of the crane/scissorlift/cherrypicker required to get someone up there. Along with the OHS issues associated with dealing with birds trying to protect thier young.

I personally think they should leave it – if the peice is meant to be a statement about the planet earth (the previous globe was at least), and the Earth is a ‘nest’, then wouldn’t it make sense to leave some creatures living and nesting inside it?

An enterprising cat or an enterprising catapult?

Gotta love the birds.

I was at the NGA last week and saw this nest. It was very windy that day and the suspended sculpture was bouncing around vigorously. The birds seemed fairly content though.

Let me drop my resolution to 640×480……oh yeah!

looks like a nest to me h1ng0.

You mean that small black dot in the lower section of that small round thing is a bird?
