Territory and Municipal Services are warning that southern commuters won’t have a Woden bus station tomorrow:

Territory and Municipal Services wishes to advise the public that Woden Bus Station will be temporarily closed between 8.30 am and 4 pm on Tuesday 24 January 2012.

The closure is to assist ACT Policing with a training exercise which will be carried out during the day. No public access to the bus station will be permitted during this time.

All services that would normally arrive and depart from Woden Bus Station during this time will arrive and depart from the car park on Callam Street adjacent to the Hellenic Club.

Signage has been erected within Woden Bus Station to alert people to the closure. ACTION staff will be available at the alternative station to assist people catching the bus.

ACTION will also be providing a shuttle service to help those with mobility difficulties from the taxi rank outside the Bus Station’s entrance to the alternative Bus Station

Looks like they have packed up and gone home with nary a harsh word, gunshot or explosion heard.

Im happily surprised, even reassured as this actually seems to have a component of commonsense, recognition that Woden is a place many Canberrans go, ie real humans, evidently is one of ACT’s busiest places. Also, possibly this is about AFP recognising that Woden interchange has had highest crime of all interchanges, possibly frustrated that this bloody reality is completely ignored by ACT government. Afterall, people shop anyway, spend lots of money so Westfields happy and hey, wtf, its south of the lake , so who cares? ACT govn only registers Bus Interchange Crime to the edge of Interchange footpath.. thats one reason why Belc got the refit, I call it nasty empty politics that endangers too many people..Anyway, I think police practicing in real world is essential as thats where people die…

I guess doing it at night would interfere with all those nighttime bus services?

obviously Albemarle and Alexander Buildings (vacated by Health in early 2010) are no longer suitable for police exercises.

anyone know when these eyesore buildings are going to be torn down?

When did the interchange get downgraded to a station?

Wish I had known about this earlier today when I was in Woden. Would have loved to go tape samples of various substances, packages with suspicious wiring, etc under the benches in the interchange. You know, to add to the fun during training. 🙂

Why do the police like to take over public areas when they do training? The fireys build their own training area in hume, but Id swear Ive heard of bus interchanges closing for an entire day to allow some police ‘training’ to occur…

Could they not do that on a Sunday afternoon for example when no-one is using the service?

Why do you like to whinge on a public forum? Could you not do it on a Sunday when fewer people have to read it?

Are you one of the people that will have to walk an extra hundred metres to catch a bus? Would you like a hug?

Hope it doesn’t rain for all those commuters. I would have thoguht that the optimum time would have been a week or so ago when you could have shot cannons through the interchange and missed everything!

And where are the cars that park in the car park on Callam Street supposed to park? Seriously, couldn’t they even wait until after the peak hour to start, say 9:30am, a minimise disruption.

As I recall, there is an area in that car park (Callam street side) which is bus parking only- so that scenario that you fear will not occur. Buses will be able to slide in and slide out without problems.

I’m going to say that if the firies did training in public areas, like say a bus interchange, then the bus interchange would be burnt down…. Lot more cost effective to build something that they can set on fire a lot of times….

This is going to cause a huge issue when the kiddies who made that shrine to their dead friend find out. I wouldn’t want to be the SWAT guys then.

Because you can’t have security theatre is nobody is watching.
