Just heard a rumor that Peter Blackshaw and Independant real estate apparently merged last night in a deal signed at 6pm.

Does anyone know anything?

Never been burnt by a RE agent yet, but have had some fairly dodgy propositions put to me. I own several properties, and I would say that, in general, most RE agents are worse liars than used car dealers.

It’s a bit of a dirty industry, dominated by sales tactics and techniques, often carried out by people with less than impeccable ethics. That said, there are a few good ones, and these people are well worth seeking out and dealing with. I am dealing with Capital First National at O’Connor at the moment for one of my investments, and have found them to be excellent.

Apparently it’s just their head offices that are merging, everything else stays pretty much the same.

Peter Blackshaw and Independent. Hell, and I though Germany and Italy getting together during WWII was bad news. These two might not take over Europe, but they’ll sure take over Canberra’s real estate market with their evil. Dealt with both companies, hate them both.

“as the whole industry is a bunch of parasites and boosters who push image over substance and prey mercilessly on the psychological insecurities and low self esteem of house buyers and potential house buyers”
–I’m not sure if this is appropriate but I would like to say that at least one real estate agent is decent in Canberra. Jim (James) Cook at Hodgkinson in Tuggeranong. We are not friends or anything, but he sold our former investment property three years ago. After meeting with a dozen agents, he was the only decent one. Always on time, friendly to both us and prospective buyers, very professional and in my opinion, charged fees that were lower than what he deserved. AND HE GOT US A GREAT PRICE even though the market was going down, just short of a record for the suburb!
But in addition to Mr Cook, I hope there are at least a few other decent agents around Canberra.

interesting generalisation myrmecia. on what basis do you make that claim?

Independent are a bunch of f@#kwits… I would never do business with them

Nothing against these companies but, as the whole industry is a bunch of parasites and boosters who push image over substance and prey mercilessly on the psychological insecurities and low self esteem of house buyers and potential house buyers – who gives a stuff?
