Wow, here’s a real trip down memory lane. “pugsley2005” has YouTubed this with the following note:

    Extract of Capital 7’s Eyewitness News presentation – 6pm May 9, 1988.

Australia’s Parliament House was opened in Canberra (Australian Capital Territory) by Her Majesty the Queen. A construction marvel.

I believe if you look very closely you can see, right at the end, a very little version of RiotACT’s Jazz moving in to help Her Maj open the door to the building.

Where’s the Aboriginal Tent Embassy?

But yeah, great footage!

The Tent Embassy was on hiatus between the mid 1970s and Australia Day 1992 when it was reinstated. I used to do a courier run on foot from Treasury to the minister’s office in OPH during 1981/82 and there was no Tent Embassy then.

The Tent Embassy had been packed up. It was reserected and has grown again from there. The first one was well maintained and ‘the locals’ were very friendly.

I was a courier with Joint House Dep’t in 1986 and enjoyed going into the new PH while it was being built. Scariest day for me at OPH was when the big ‘wymins’ protest where thousands of them camped on the lawn outside OPH for a few days. OPH went into lock down quite a few times during that period but I still had to do my courier run. I was surrounded by the ‘wymin’ on one occassion and had the crap shaken out of the van I was in. Scary stuff.

That is so cool, fabforty! The Queen full-on bush-dancing may have been more impressive, but sounds like people were kind of relieved when she pushed off.

Ahhh… memories. I was there on the day as part of the team that organised the whole opening ceremony. It was an amazing day and the Queen’s Reception that night was equally memorable. The sight of John Howard full-on bush-dancing is one thing I wont forget. Once Her Maj retired for the evening, the party really got started.

Thanks for that blast from the past.

nope thats not me, i think i was just out of picture. Seems i got something useful out of the scouts other than learning how to tie a knot

0:24 That’s not how you spell ‘Parliament’…

Well I just found it, I didn’t edit it!

Haha, yeah I realise that, sorry if I offended.

Robbo used to live up the street from me (in Scullin) when I was growing up. I was impressed to see a ‘celebrity’ out mowing the lawn in ruggers and thongs every saturday morning.

Oh, Robbo! I liked him.

Well I just found it, I didn’t edit it!

Yes more content would have been nice but still interesting.

Oh, that brings me to the question, when did Geoff Hiscock start as newsreader for Capital?

Thanks for posting that, but where was the actual content? It was all filler?!

Still, pretty cool seeing how the vegetation and moustaches have changed so much in that time.
