The Bureau of Meteorology is giving notice of foul weather:

A complex low pressure system with centres over Victoria and Bass Strait is deepening and moving slowly southeast, directing a vigorous northwest to southwesterly airstream over New South Wales. Conditions are expected to ease later Saturday as the low moves away from the region.

Winds averaging over 65 km/h with peak gusts around 100 km/h are forecast for parts of the Illawarra, Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains forecast districts and higher parts of the Australian Capital Territory Friday evening and early Saturday morning.

Very strong winds are also expected about parts of the Central Tablelands, South Coast and South West Slopes districts, although current information suggests these areas are not likely to reach the warning threshold.

Blizzard conditions are forecast for parts of the Snowy Mountains forecast district and Australian Capital Territory above about 1000 metres Friday evening and early Saturday morning.

Thredbo top station has reported wind gusts of 100 km/h this morning.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
Keep clear of fallen power lines.
For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.

If you get a striking photo of the unpleasantness send it in to images@the-riotact.com .

… or if you still feel the sense of loss for the summer we never had and want to escape the cold via your computer screen, the surfer’s equivalent is here:

@maniac

Victims of their own success, six million copies pushed out in first few days. Game has its faults and player-base is obviously unimpressed at being used as unpaid beta testers for the first week or three.

But I’m enjoying it and the better half wants her own copy. Just the thing for chilly cold days like today.

The bridge hasnt been fixed but you can still get over it. the road into Fleas creek is a bit greasy but was passable today, but I suspect if any more rain falls it may be worth not driving on it and chewing it up too much.

The roads either side of the river (left turns off Brindabella Road are closed to local traffic / resident due to the damage that was done in the floods. I spoke with someone from the Tumut Shire and they said they will reopen them when they are repaired (I suspect the Grace Road side will never be reopened to the general public regarless of the fact it is a public road maintained by a local Shire),

There are some good off road tracks as you head further towards Tumut that head off to the left into the National Park, but I am not sure of the regulations so you may have to check it out with the local shire or park rangers.

Good luck out there, its one of the great places on our backdoor

Myself and two others fished the Goodradigbee River today at the Brindabella Valley today and it was bitterly cold. In fact I would go so far as to say it was the coldest day I have ever spent fishing out there. As we were coming home it had started to snow above 1000m (GPS) and the flakes were as big as I had ever seen,

If it keeps up overnight there will be quite a good cover up there tomorrow but the rain, snow, the clay type soil and the cold has made the road pretty slippery in many places. We were down to about 40km for a fair bit of the time/

Is the Goobradigbee bridge fixed yet or still closed? Wouldn’t mind heading up one day to do some 4×4 action or camping.

It’s open and safe to drive on, but not yet completely fixed.

And for anyone on social media of any sort, there’s an extra warning: brace yourself for blizzard-like conditions of moaning status updates and tweets and whatevers from the weather whingers. You know, the ones that tie any sort of enjoyment of their lives to what the meteorological conditions are like. Pah!

Wow – you must know a lot of whining moaners. How could they not be enjoying today’s weather?

All my mates on Twitter/Facebook are commenting that the weather today is just lovely and they can’t wait to knock off work to go for a swim in the lake….

Now all you people who love autumn can see what it really means. Bracing = Blizzards.

*joke

“Keep clear of fallen power lines” – wow, lucky they warned me, otherwise I would have tried to pick them up.

On another note, does Andrew Bolt reckon Canberra should get all blizzards first, before the rest of the country (all the “real” people) has to experience them?
