wow, hadn’t thought of that.

Anyway, more detailed info about the eclipse from The Canberra Times:
“Well known astronomer and news editor of Sky and Space magazine, Dave Reneke, said a lunar eclipse is one of the most spectacular sights in astronomy and one not to be missed. It can only take place at full moon, and only if the moon passes through some portion of Earth’s shadow.

“The most impressive part starts when the Moon’s leading edge first enters the earth’s shadow, and the eclipse begins,” said Mr Reneke. “Over the next hour or so, the moon will slip into total darkness.”

The lunar eclipse will start at about 6.50pm on Tuesday August 28 and by 7.50pm the moon will be totally obscured by the Earth’s shadow.

At about 9.23pm, the moon will start to reappear, becoming completely visible by about 10.30pm.

Mr Watson said people keen to see next week’s cosmic event should turn their eyes eastwards.

“Because the moon will be rising at the time, you’ll need to have somewhere that has a good view of the eastern horizon, like looking over the ocean, but really anywhere with a low eastern horizon,” Mr Watson said.

Mr Reneke said that unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses were completely safe to watch.

“You don’t need any kind of protective filters. It isn’t even necessary to use a telescope. You can watch the lunar eclipse with nothing more than your own two eyes,” he said.

Well this has brought up unpleasant memories. Last time I saw the moon red was from the smoke of the 2003 bushfires.

Is 9:58 really that late. Us creative folk know no sleep nor bedtime. That said I rarely get more than 4.5 hours of sleep and live on coffee so you may be onto something.

I can see the headlines now…

RiotACT saves Canberra, and several chickens.

i could change it mael, but i think the chances of that are on par with the sun failing to rise

Got an auto approve button jazz ?

Open slather for anybody submitting a story between 9pm and 11pm tomorrow night 😛

Actually, that’d be pretty good on account of everybody needs to lock up their chickens if they have them because the loonies will be about.

Having them indoors on the Say It! button will be a civic duty, if nothing else than to give the police a bit of a break.

Oh, and red moon means zombies. If your playstation buddy starts gnawing on your arm it’s too late, your already affected.

Isn’t the ‘red moon’ the English translation of the ancient Egyptian term for menstrual period?

i guess that means that i’ll have be online at 9.58pm waiting to publish your submission asp?

I understand that the Exclusive Brethren have arranged this as a punishment for Oz not wanting J Howard as their PM. Say “I want you John, I really really do!” three times and send a large cheque in order to return the moon to its normal blue.

Well, I’m going to be out there then with two cameras, heaps of Fuji Velvia, a 400mm lens and anything else to help me get a shot of this.

Mark my words, first pics will be posted to RiotACT by 10pm.

i did see a thing saying it will also on the discovery channel for those in the fox cave afraid that they will get a bit too much moonburn or afraid of the dark
