A 29-year-old provisional driver from Yass was arrested last night (Tuesday, September 17) for high range drink driving.

Around 10.50pm, a white Toyota Hilux was stopped by police driving in the vicinity of the Burns Club in Kambah, after police were called there in response to a suspicious vehicle.

Police conducted a breath test on the driver who returned a positive reading.

The man was taken into custody and conveyed to the Tuggeranong Police Station where he underwent a breath analysis, returning a reading of 0.171 grams of alcohol per 210 litres of breath. The defendant being a provisional driver is subject to a blood alcohol limit of zero.

Due to the high reading, the man’s right to drive in the ACT was immediately suspended.

He has been summonsed to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on December 11.

Is it now breath-alcohol content (instead of blood-alcohol content)?

There is a pretty close relationship between the contents of your blood and the contents of your breath for many volatile chemicals including alcohol. Its not a perfect measure, but when the limit is zero it really doesn’t matter. Given the average volume of a full breath is about 5 litres, it might take a while to give a 210 litre breath sample though.

Is this just poor journalism or have the method of measurement of Blood-Alcohol Content/Concentration (BAC) changed? I’d always understood the numbers were expressed as a percentage of your blood – ie. the legal driving limit for driver with a full-licence is 0.05 meaning that no more than 0.05% of a sample of your blood can be alcohol. Since when was it measured in terms of grams per litres of breath? Is it now breath-alcohol content (instead of blood-alcohol content)?

It just means that they got them on a breath test not a blood test (See this). Anyway 0.05 is actually 0.047% w/w or 0.063% v/v…

On P plates at 29. Has this hero experienced ‘difficulties’ in the past?

I wonder what his vehicle was suspicious of.

I wonder what makes a vehicle “suspicious”.

The fact that the Burns Club staff had just removed him from the premises for being too pissed and then saw him climb in the drivers seat.

Poor lad, it’s going to be a long bus ride from Yass if he works in the ACT.
