Two ACT Policing officers have been injured after responding to an incident in Griffith early this morning (Monday, August 22).
About 12.35 am police were called to a unit block on Sturt Avenue following a report of people fighting.
Two men were located and were speaking with police when one became abusive and aggressive. Police took hold of the man, due to his threatening manner, which he resisted. At this time another man ran at the officers.
A struggle with both men resulted with the female police officer being punched in the face and struck to her lower back by one of the men while the male officer sustained an injury to his left eye after being punched by the other man.
Acting Superintendent Rod Anderson was disappointed after this most recent attack, saying police will not condone assaults against its members.
“ACT Policing and the community will not tolerate assaults against officers who are going about their lawful duties protecting the community. Offenders will be prosecuted and police will continue to take a firm stand against this type of behaviour,” Acting Superintendent Rod Anderson said.
Both men were arrested. One will attend the ACT Magistrates Court later today. The other man was released on Watch House bail to be summonsed to court on a later date.
The men will be charged with a number of offences including causing harm to Commonwealth Public Official, obstructing a Commonwealth Public Official, common assault and providing false name/address.
