Blunder in You Are Here communications

Hey guys,

One thing that keeps happening is that we keep getting letters in the You Are Here festival email asking ‘Where do we buy tickets?’ and ‘How much does this cost?’ so I guess we’re doing something wrong and not being clear enough that everything is free. We’ve tried to clear this up by putting together a list of true things:

1. None of our events cost anything.

2. Everything is free.

3. We don’t sell tickets or charge dollars.

4. What would we even do with your money? Where would we put it?

5. Things don’t cost things.

6. This is happening for you. If you’re in Canberra, if you exist in Canberra, this is for you. It’s a present. Not a transaction. You get this, for living here.

7. You might not want it. That’s fine. You can still check it out if you’re passing through Civic. Poke your head in and check out an event for five minutes. Nothing will be asked of you.

8. We’ve tried to make it easy for people to see stuff. The whole festival happens in the CBD. All venues are accessible for people with disabilities. All events are all-ages (except the two in pubs).

9. Sometimes our partner events cost money. They’re clearly labelled on the website. (I just went through the program and found two events, out of 113.) If you don’t see a notice clearly indicating that money will be charged, money won’t be charged.

10. The one sort-of exception is kind of a case in point: possibly our coolest event is a show called Talon Salon, which premiered at the Next Wave Festival in Melbourne. It takes place in the Gentle Nails salon in Garema Place. Artist Michele Lee has created a series of radio plays exploring the lives of Vietnamese-Australian immigrants working in nail salons. In Talon Salon, you are given a set of headphones and immersed in one of four fictional audio pieces while you receive the nail treatment of your choice. You pay for the manicure: the art is free.

11. That’s all. Keep it real, kids –
