Body in the lake

ACT Policing’s Water Operations this morning (Sunday, October 23) recovered the body of a man from Lake Burley Griffin near the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge.

A post mortem will be conducted although at this time, there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the man’s death. A report is being prepared for the Coroner.

[Courtesy ACT Policing]

Our information is the deceased had been drinking heavily at ANU’s Octoberfest before going for an ill advised swim.

UPDATE: The Canberra Times are saying it was one William Boyle who appears to have been a very popular guy.

A bit of a tasteless comment snoop848.
This lad was to celebrate his birthday next week – there are a lot of his friends grieving tonight. I hope his family don’t see your comment. Whatever happened, a young life was lost tragically. Have some respect.

From a Policing perspective, a statement won’t be required, I guess.

today’s Sunday Times: “police hold grave concerns for a man.. keys, wallet and clothes left on the shore… last seen socialising with friends at ANU’s Oktoberfest.” Seems fair to suppose it’s looking a lot like misadventure.

Brief article on Page 10 of the Canberra Sunday Times mentioning that a man was missing after Octoberfest celebrations on Thursday, with some of his belongings found in a park near the lake.

Disregard – just saw the RiotAct thread about that one.

“No suspicious circumstances” again. Someone get the cops a dictionary so they can spell the word suicide properly in their press releases.

Regardless of the reason/s behind this occurring (whether alcohol related or not), it would do people some good to refrain from jumping to unsubstantiated conclusions.

Canberra is a small place. I would suggest showing some respect and not making this any harder for the many people who have been affected today.

Condolences to his family and friends- he will be missed.

Or did he fall in after a bout of Stendahl’s Syndrome when the Queen went past?

I thought Oktoberfest (the big one they have at Epic/Horse Track wherever it is up there) wasn’t until next week?

gooterz 5:47 pm 23 Oct 11

Was this before or after the queen was on the same lake?

milkman 5:22 pm 23 Oct 11

Hammered drunk and fell over while goofing around would be one possibility.

well this is looking a lot like misadenture.

Not sure if typo, or tragic portmanteau.

To find a body that’s sufficiently dead to warrant a post mortem seems pretty bloody suss to me!

If your doctor hasn’t seen you within the last 3 months and/or won’t sign a death certificate stating the cause of death then a post mortem will be held. That’s a lot of post mortems each year.

One would imagine Octoberfest’s RSA compliance might be about to become an issue.

How do you know it was suicide?

I’m thinking misadventure, or it would not even be a press release.

This might explain why 3 Police cars & Forensics were hanging around a bicycle & few other possessions just below the Commonwealth Avenue bridge yesterday afternoon. This might also explain why a detective was standing on the same bridge, while the ACT Police boat was floating just below him this morning.

trevar 2:24 pm 23 Oct 11

Hang on, if there were no suspicious circumstances, does that mean they were expecting the body to be dumped in the lake? Is this just the normal way to dispose of corpses these days?

To find a body that’s sufficiently dead to warrant a post mortem seems pretty bloody suss to me!
