Rugbyheaven informs us that with the lid being lifted on foreign players in Australian Super 14 franchises the Brumbies are getting a lot of inquiries from Saffer players.

Have no fear that this will be a sudden change though, apparently we’re only thinking about bringing them in come 2010.

Let’s hope the same doesn’t eventuate here. I’m all for cultural diversity, but it would be a shame if all our best RU players have to head OS to make a quid. Or peso. Or franc.

Agreed. But it could be good for rugby getting the SA style of play (the dirty barstards) into some aussie teams

“Franchises are allowed to sign-up just two overseas imports, one of whom can be a “marquee” player.”

That’s something akin to how the import system first worked for the English Premier League back in the day. Prior to that, if you look at the team sheets for the then First Division or FA Cup sides, it was a see of English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh names.

Now, of course, you’re hard-pressed to spot the pom, paddy, Jimmah or Gareth on most EPL sides.

Let’s hope the same doesn’t eventuate here. I’m all for cultural diversity, but it would be a shame if all our best RU players have to head OS to make a quid. Or peso. Or franc.
