ACT Policing General Duties and the Specialist Response Group (SRG) Bomb Response Team attended a residence in Kaleen yesterday (Sunday, May 5) where they rendered a suspicious device safe.

Police were called to the residence after a young person attending a 16th birthday party on Saturday night had brought a present (modified aerosol can) that was considered suspicious.

Police were not informed of the suspicious package until Sunday where they attended the residence. The young person who had brought the suspicious device to the party and his father attended the location.

Information relating to the suspicious device was provided to the SRG before they entered the premises and rendered the device safe.

The young person, who resides in Queanbeyan, attended Gungahlin Police Station where he made full admissions to making the device.

Investigations are ongoing.

Now I’m wondering where my orange gun went… It must be in the shed somewhere, could be time to introduce it to the next generation!

Might wanna make a new one, PVC can get brittle with age sometimes…

I had a potato gun fashioned from PVC piping and aerosol cans as a 16 year old. Best. Present. Ever.

Well perhaps they should be grateful that the SRG/BRT diffused an explosive situation.

eh maybe I read/watched too much on it but I do remember them explaining how it worked in more detail then you just stated.

After I posted that I googled it, and read a few more details, so I suppose some of the more sensationalist news shows probably spent a while walking morbid interested people through it.

I was surprised to see that there was quite a detailed Wikipedia article on “pressure cooker bombs”.

Present went down a bomb..

Got bombed at the birthday party.

Party went with a bang….

Seriously they told us how to make the bombs used in Boston on national news + the Internet.

Really? There were instructions? All I heard was that the bombs involved a pressure cooker and was triggered with a phone – hardly a DIY manual.

Uh oh. I best return my gift for you then…..

Don’t on my account. What I should have said was “who gives someone a bomb without first determining that the friend in question would share your belief that such a thing would be cool”. Not that I am endorsing such things of course.

I had a tech-head mate who built me a small scale flame thrower out of a bbq lighter for one of my birthdays as a kid. Gotta say that at sixteen I’d have been pretty chuffed if he’d given me a bomb like this so I think the real question here is, who called the police?

Someone who has been watching to much news on TV. Seriously they told us how to make the bombs used in Boston on national news >> + the Internet. I am really not that shocked that someone would do that for the lolz.
