bonsai master

TAMS are letting us know that the arboretum’s bonsai museum has a Japanese visitor givin them some pointers:

“This week Mr Yusuke Uchida from Nagoya, Japan, who worked as an apprentice for four years with renowned bonsai master, Mr Junichiro Tanaka, will be working at the Arboretum, imparting his knowledge of this ancient art,” Mr Taafe said.

“Mr Uchida will help refine some of the bonsai owned by the collection and in doing so the staff and volunteers will learn the valuable techniques used to create some of the world’s finest bonsai, as seen in Japan.

“This is the first engagement of its type at the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection and we hope it creates a precedent for other internationally recognised bonsai artists to visit. It is a great opportunity for them to gain an insight into the cultivation of Australian species of trees such as bonsai and the management of bonsai from an Australian perspective.

It would be really cool to meet a dwarf bonsai master who is offended when you say the tree he sits under is a bonsai.

I swear to god…we could have a post here titled ‘ACT resident uses the power of rainbows to cure cancer and feed the world’s starving masses’, and still someone would manage to find a negative angle on it.

Of course there would be a negative angle to such a claim as it is a flippant one.
I would still like to know how much it is costing us and also why is he wearing sunglasses?
Channeling Bono perhaps?

He is wearing sunglasses as he suffers from a form of epilepsy and is very sensitive to light. As far as costs go, there is only one employee, the rest of the work is done by volunteers.

That’s an interesting slant on it, how do you come to that conclusion?

Deliberately stunting the growth of a tree by continually pruning and shaping the tree with clamps etc. I can just imagine the outcry if we did that to puppies. Footbinding and those stupid “stop growing kittens in bottles” email scams come to mind…

I agree, footbinding is kinda cruel, however, I am not sure you understand bonsai, as it is far from stunting. A stunted bonsai would end up being in very poor health, and I agree, that would be cruel. Bonsai trees should be grown strong and healthy, pampered and given every need and requirement it has in order to grow. The trimming and styling process is simply a means to give the tree an appearance of a majestic old tree, but in miniature.
Trimming trees happens in almost every backyard in the country. Actew make us trim our trees away from powerlines, hedges are cut back to keep their shape, roses are pruned to encourage flowers to grow – none of this is considered cruel.
If bonsai were cruel, the trees would not live for hundreds of years. I believe if trees were to have emotions, crazy as it might sound, they would consider being chosen for bonsai as an honour. Who wouldn’t love being pampered and waited on your every need.
🙂

How much is this costing us?
