Bored Little Yappy Dogs...

I am writing to the owners of all those yappy little Furballs that are kicked out of the house at 7-8am and don’t see their loving masters till 5pm.

Little dogs get bored when cooped up in the backyard all day and love to just yap yap yap yip yap at nothing all day. This is most troubling to the elderly and sick whom are at home all day as well, the noise pollution is abhorrent and will drive one nuts. If you cannot leave your dog in the house because it wrecks the furniture or poops all over the house, give a thought to your neighbors who have to put up with it all day long.

There are things that can be done to try stop your loving little Furballs to continuously yapping all day, Bark Suppression collars are a good start, they work just fine on little yappy dogs. For the IT minded a simple webcam with bi-directional audio are a good way to keep eyes and ears on your yappy little Furballs, and call commands directly from your workstation either on your PC or from you smartphone, if you think your yappy little Furball is your household security then this is a good option.

I am trying to write this as understandingly as I possibly can, which is an effort as I am stuck at my new home with a painful injury and the neighbors dogs have been yapping and Yipping all day for most of the past month.

There are things the we can do with non compliant neighbors as don’t forget we, the recipients of noisy little Furballs, have rights as well, have a gentle talk with your neighbors first of all, if you find out they are as receptive to command and suggestion as their cute little loving Furballs, you may want to keep a diary with times and dates and submit a complaint to the ACT EPA online. It’s simply amazing what dog owners will do when there loving little yappy Furballs are threatened with eviction or worse.

Au revoir.

Well played. Now I am off to deploy the tractor beam.

It does my effing head in to come home after a double shift of 16 hours at 0800 to have the houso mutts from four doors up cranking up the neighbourhood canine choir. I’ve tried talking civilly to them, but they are thrown off by that style of communication & don’t give a toss – why would they? They have no freaking idea what the common man has to do to earn a buck.

People will generally go a fair way to avoid a nasty neighbourhood dispute, so show a bit of empathy & respect for others when they come up and go “Mate, I’m just letting you know that your kelpie has blah blah blah…would it be okay if ….

Point is, I don’t blame the dog. Any animal is only as good as its primary handler, and even the gurus can’t help every animal…so what sort of person are you???

Good Day

Gee…. I don’t know what’s worse? The noisy dogs or people answering this post, the assumptions are simply amazing…….slamming on doors? yelling abuse at neighbors? no suggestion to solve the issue diplomatically? alias James Bond? new to the internet? Threatening tone? How do I know the neighbor knows? A month to whinge? hahahahahahahaha…….

Christ…..some of the imaginations out there, some of you lot must be as bored as the dogs. I’m not going to bother answering any of it.

I do sincerely appreciate constructive support from some of you. Trust that my post was well thought out with a genuine effort to see the lighter side of it all, to make me feel better. So jam all of your negativity and assumptions up your butts.

Cheers.

‘A’ grade tanty, mate. Absolutely top notch. My 5 year old would be proud. I think this internet stuff may not be for you. Woof!

Said the pot to the kettle. They have a point.

What’s that point? Saralsal seems to think that every response – whether responding to them, or someone telling their own story – is aimed directly at them. He / she doesn’t seem to understand that the conversation normally goes beyond whatever they’ve written in the OP, and takes a life of its own (especially this type of topic, which almost everyone has their own experience of). So they post a ranting and raving response that makes little sense at all, while thinking that building servers for years somehow equates to being able to respond to people on an online forum?

Through all of this, the simple question of whether they’ve even spoken to their neighbour about the dogs still goes unanswered. It really doesn’t have to be this hard!

I don’t think anyone has read the initial post at all? again more assumptions? Turning out to be a right circus this lot (apart from the replies that refer to the original post with the understanding it deserves and have not made any assumptions) I do think the defensive ones out there a sitting at work after kicking there little Furballs out in the 35 degree heat feeling at little guilty and embarrassed at the though of there Furballs doing any wrong at all…….

All ye old wise ones out there…..get back to work!

You still have not answered the question. You just started on another crazy and very entertaining rant like the bored little yappy dogs you dislike so much. Have you spoken to your neighbours or not?

Who are you? my mother? READ MY POST!

Try going to see the neighbours of the so called yappy dogs. Introduce yourself. Talk to them, nicely about the dog yapping. We had new neighbours move in about 4 years ago., Their dog just barked and barked. I went to speak with them and told them that we believe good communication between neighbours is essential. I told them about their dog barking. It’s a staffy. As is my dog. I asked if I could meet the dog. This dog is super friendly, she was just barking at different things to what she was accustomed to. Now that she has met me, she knows my voice, she knows what I look like and now I just call out to her to shush and she does.
We’ve even now had the neighbours ask us to dog sit when they go away. They leave their house key and we feed the dog. She’s a beautiful dog and if you give your neighbours a chance and ask to meet their dogs. you might find yourself in a nice neighbourly relationship.

I’ve been building servers and designing websites for years ya muppet. All for your entertainment it seems. Ha.

That’s a bit of a swing and a miss.

Having said that, the original point is spot on – these sorts of animals are a total nightmare for shiftworkers and people trying to recover from injury or illness.

Bearing in mind Tooks’ testimony to the effect that the owners could be in the very unlikely position of not being aware their animal is noisy, and remembering the experiences of many that the ACT government, with only about 25,000 employees, is way too understaffed to actually do anything, Dunfungus’s magician could appeal to some.

There is however another option. Science.
You have all day, sitting at home doing nothing much else, to figure out exactly what kind of noises will set off the yappy dogs.
Experiment with a range of noises and measure the effects.
Find the right balance between discretion and effect.
Eventually, you will devise a great way to get that yappy dog going nuts at 1am. And 2am. And 3am. And 4am.
I can tell you from experience: the owners will deal with the issue almost instantly and you will never hear that dog again.

My dog is old and lazy and barely gets off the couch these days… But come about midnight when the possums are out having parties on the powerlines along the back fence, she barks and has her fun for awhile. She’s too old to be left home alone these days and lives my “Grandma” so there isn’t alot I can do about it.

The only complaint we’ve ever received is from our next door neighbour who has a dog that barks ALL day while they’re at work. They don’t believe their little precious furball could make so much noise. So while some owners may not be aware their dog is barking all day, others like to remain oblivious.

We had a lovely little missive in our mailbox a few months ago, the crux of it was if we didn’t do “something about our trucking mutt” they would be back. They then proceeded to call us a name that rhymes with stunts.

I get that our dog might bark, and in the past a neighbour let us know that it did and we bought the collar, the toys etc and it stopped for a while. Clearly she is getting agitated again so we have now put those measures back in place, plus extra security. we now also have the sophisticated video equipment that the OP spoke about. Hubby likes his toys!

But this isn’t the way to get us to do something about it. It was a horrible feeling finding that in our mailbox, I felt unsafe. What if my very literate 9 year old had checked the mail that day?

We went to the cops and naturally they can do nothing without knowing who but it’s just not on. Come and speak to us, instead of resorting to offensive, spineless letters in our mailbox.

If the letter commenced with “You have the most hated dog in the neighbourhood….” then you have a problem.
People who send these types of threats have already tried to solve barking dog problems with neighbours before and they have found from experience that the police or Domestic Animal Services will do little and even then they will not enforce the powers they have.
Some people do not deserve to have dogs and they are in denial that they cause any problems at all.

Newcomer to the internet? If you thought yapping was irritating, wait until someone doesn’t agree with you in forums.

Dogs bark for all manner of reasons, boredom only being one of those. Most dogs feel the need to protect the house and bark to ward off anyone who comes near.

Having two dogs does help quite a lot. We had a dog who was getting destructive during the day but as soon as we got a second dog he calmed right down.

Even as a dog owner we find barking annoying. As soon as our dogs start making noise we are straight outside to calm them down. Unfortunately we live next to a laneway and some of the neighbourhood kids think it’s funny to bang on our fence and antagonise our dogs.

Judging by the tone of the post I’m guessing that the author doesn’t have any pets? They might be a little more sympathetic otherwise.

We went to the cops and naturally they can do nothing without knowing who but it’s just not on. Come and speak to us, instead of resorting to offensive, spineless letters in our mailbox.

Just wanted to add this: I had a dog that was not a problem barker…until we went out. He would bark at nothing over long periods. Must’ve driven the neighbours crazy but here’s the thing: I had no idea until a neighbour slipped a note in our letterbox one day. I felt terrible that my dog had been causing these issues for our neighbours but no one ever approached me.

The short story is I went and had a chat with the neighbour who left the note, apologised and thanked her for letting me know. From there I was able to take steps to fix the problem. Had that one neighbour not let me know, I would’ve remained oblivious to the problem.

Don’t always assume the owner knows their dog is a problem.

Why did you wait a month to have a whinge? And, as others here have asked, what evidence do you have that the owners are aware that their dogs bark when the owners are not home?

I agree that owners should control barking dogs. Once told – politely – most owners will be reasonable and will take measures to control their dogs. If you’ve suffered for a month, since you must be pretty wound up by now, taking a breath and offering to work with the owners will be likely to achieve a lot more than surprising them by storming round to their house and yelling at them.

And, if you intended to make a formal complaint, since you would have to keep a diary anyway, why not show the information to the owners first so that they can see when and where their dogs are barking. It’s probably just loneliness – as a full day of barking would indicate – but it could be something simple like a lizard, a particular vehicle, another dog or neighbour’s activities that setting them off.

Talking to your neighbours first is a must, you can’t really go on a spree of revenge until they at least know about the problem. Last little yappy dog we lived near the neighbours would put outside at night and manage to sleep through it, while it also set off the dogs on the other side of my house. I ended up walking two doors up and knocking on their door until they were awake several times in the middle of the night until they got the idea and trained their damn dog.

I have had to do the same (I bang on the door, not knock) but it really didn’t solve the problem. I even recorded the barking during the day and played it back to them over the phone at 2.00am.
All this does is get them to change their phone number.
Recently, a magician moved into the neighbourhood. How do I know he/she is a magician?
Well yappy dogs have been disappearing.

Perhaps the owners of the dogs are not even aware that their dogs are barking during the day.

How do you know the neighbour is well aware? Have you spoken to them? Or are you just assuming?

It’s even worse when they are left outside late at night and just keep barking while you’re trying to get to sleep. I had neighbours with one of them some years ago and approaching them to complain was a waste of time. They were so one-eyed they couldn’t believe their precious little dog could cause a problem. They let it roam and one day I was working in my front garden and it came at me. I had to restrain myself while simultaneously laughing at it and wondering how dumb it was. Thankfully most of my neighbours now have cats. The occasional two minute hissing session is wonderful compared to the previous daily barking that ran from 30 minutes to multiple hours every day.

It’s simply amazing what dog owners will do when there loving little yappy Furballs are threatened with eviction or worse.

Yeah. That will help resolve the issue, and will help to strengthen the terrific relationship you obviously have with your neighbours too.

AllyA said :

… or barking continually over the weekend while their owners are away (and setting off other dogs within earshot as well). But hey, your right to have a dog that barks for hours on end – because the poor dog doesn’t know why it has been, in its perception, abandoned – trumps the right of neighbours to peaceful enjoyment of the interior of their own homes, correct?

Could not agree more with the above.
Sure, I get that you are frustrated with the situation, but your sarcastic tone doesn’t do anything for your cause.

There are a number of reasons why the dog could be barking– and please remember, this is someone’s beloved pet– so threatening “or worse” (and please, do feel free to explain what you mean by that) seems fairly extreme and quite frankly, an alarming statement to make.

Perhaps you would be best off approaching your neighbour and having a conversation face to face as suggested, or is it more a case of you would rather complain on the web and do nothing in real life?

Agree. My neighbours have 4 aggressive little mongrels – and I believe you need a permit for 4 or more dogs for a start. Have started the complaint process many times by filling out the forms (keeping a diary) – except when you’re not home much the diary doesn’t accurately indicate the situation…

Madam Cholet1:27 pm 11 Nov 14

That would be good if Domestic Animal Services (DAS not EPA), actually do what they say they will do. In my experience (with a large barking dog, not the yappy ones on the other side of our house), they failed to act – to the point where I went to the minister (John Stanhope), who acknowledged they dropped the ball in a massive way. I kept the diary and yet they failed to even come out and listen at the times I documented that the barking would be happening – they did absolutely NOTHING. Total fail.

The situation did end when the owner was bluffed into believing there was the reams of evidence they should have collected and that action would be taken. It was only luck that someone was brought into DAS to get things back on track. And all this in a rental property where the property managers told me that their tennant had the right to peaceful enjoyment of their property (que?) As you can see it still makes me arc up!

Canberra residents can have no confidence in the authorities here to solve any noise issues, whether it be a barking dog or a noisy music playing neighbour.

I would hate to see what you would write if you were not so “understanding”. Threatening is differently not the answer. Perhaps the owners of the dogs are not even aware that their dogs are barking during the day.
