ACT Policing Traffic Operations this morning (Wednesday, March 30), arrested a 19-year-old Higgins man after his motorcycle was recorded speeding at up to 150km/h through Canberra’s northern suburbs earlier today.

Around 5.45am today, police detected the motorcyclist travelling around 130km/h in a 90km/h zone eastbound on William Hovell Drive in Belconnen.

Police attempted a traffic stop on the motorcyclist but the rider failed to heed the police direction. He turned left into Bindubi Street where he was then clocked at speeds of up 140km/h.

The rider failed to stop at the red light on Belconnen Way, where he passed through the intersection without stopping, travelling at 150km/h, into Eastern Valley Way where the posted speed limit is 60km/h.

He then turned right into College St in Bruce, and then crossed onto the wrong side of Eastern Valley Way. The rider turned back up Eastern Valley Way, again reaching speeds of between 140-150km/h. The rider finally stopped on the side of the road in Bindubi Street, Aranda, a short time later, where he admitted to police he did not have a licence.

The rider was immediately arrested and conveyed to the ACT Watch House where he will be charged with driving in a manner dangerous and driving whilst disqualified.

He will face the ACT Magistrates Court this morning.

We’d all be a lot better off if he’d augered into a tree. As it is, I’m pretty sure he’ll just figure out something equally stupid to do that will put our lives at risk in a new and interesting way once he’s on the loose again.

The only thing that surprises me is that he didn’t biff the cops in the watch house in a romantic break for freedom like that clown a few weeks ago.

Was the bike blue? I saw two fumbducks riding a crappy blue road bike and a mini-bike along the cycle paths in Kaleen yesterday.

It doesn’t say in the article whether he was being chased by a traffic car or motorcycle. He wouldn’t have much hope of out running a traffic motorcycle cop.

5.45am is not an empty time on the roads. I’m regularly on the roads around that time and there is a reasonable amount of traffic, especially tradies. 2-3am is a different story, it’s dead on the roads.

I resent people who call motorcyclists “Temporary Australians”. Unfortunately car drivers aren’t %100 safe either Mr RAAF, there is a chance of having a nasty accident in a car as well as on a bike.

Wowsers. A bloke goes out at a time the roads are empty to enjoy a bit of wind in the hair, and all you self-righteous lot can do is belittle his attempt at breaking free of the shackles binding him in this increasingly claustrophobic society. No wonder so many young men are deciding to end it all.
