ACT Policing has arrested a 31-year-old Turner man following two attempted aggravated robberies over the long weekend.

About 8pm on Saturday (March 10) a man entered the 5 Star Supermarket, Braddon, carrying what appeared to be a meat cleaver and demanded money.

When challenged by staff the offender ran out of the store.

About 1.40am this morning (Tuesday, March 13) a man attempted to gain entry to the Caltex Star Market, Braddon, through the front sliding doors. The man allegedly approached the door with a stocking over his face.

Officers from City Police Station were conducting a mobile patrol along Girrahween Street, Braddon, about 4am when they saw a man matching the description of the offender.

North District Superintendent Mick Calatzis commended the police response and that of the staff.

“The staff at Caltex should be commended for their quick thinking in deactivating the doors so that the man couldn’t gain entry,” Superintendent Mick Calatzis said.

Police arrested the man and conducted a search where they discovered a meat cleaver protruding from his pocket.

The man was taken to the ACT Watch House and charged with two counts of attempted aggravated robbery and going equipped with offensive weapon for theft.

He will face the ACT Magistrates Court today.

One less “Rambo” on our streets.

@ Supermarket, it was “Community + Storeowner Team-Work”. While 4 ladies (1 High school + 2 Uni students & their mum) help chase arm robber off across the Northbourne av, others called police & stayed around the shop to protect & comforted staff. Well do to all. Proud of Braddon Community sprit!

well the reality round braddon and turner is yes they would rob u for ur own false teeth also known as a none policed area from the servo all the way to abc

Hats off to this individual of truly rare talent.

I wish more of our Canberra vermin were of this low intellectual quality. I mean, walking up to the servo with a mask on, getting locked out, and then shambling around the scene three hours later with a cleaver sticking out of his pocket from the other failed robbery? That’s seriously messed up. If only our other blaggers, stabby merchants, streetboxers and standover men were so dim, Canberra would be a much better place.

What dark days are these, that innocent fellows can stroll around to the shops and to their friends’ flats in the early hours of the morning in order to … cleave some meat… with only the thinnest of head coverings to ward off the cold, and be accosted by the rozzers mouthing all kinds of calumny agin’em.

More importantly, how the hell do you shove a meat cleaver in your pants pocket without causing an immediate vasectomy? Not that this would be a problem of course…

I think you are an optimist…agree with the finger wagging, and perhaps a government rental property thrown in for good measure.

What was I thinking? They can hatch their next heist from the luxury of their ACT taxpayer funded balcony.

Really? This guy must have been a moron. At least wear a hat to cover the face mask until you get inside. And he was still wandering around hours afterwards.

Yay for the % Star supermarketers who fended him off. Well done guys.

Good work, the Plod.

I predict a firm finger-wagging.

Not sure if it’s a genuine concern or a passing phase, but of late there seems to have been a lot more robberies/attempted robberies than normal.
