It’s with much delight that I announce to Rioters the inaugural Braidwood Billy Cart Derby of which Hoola Hoop is a sponsor.

The event is open to allcomers in a variety of categories and we’d love to see some entries from Canberra and the surrounding region. To encourrage this further, we at Hoola Hoop are looking for a Canberra based team to sponsor in the novelty category.

Please contact us via our website: www.hoolahoop.com.au

We would like to support a cart that visually represents what we are about, which is 50’s and 60’s fashion, style and design. We can obviously supply clothing in this style to the team from our shop.

We would also like the sponsored to represent a not for profit community group or charity; ideally the team would be representitives of such an organisation. We are particularly interested in groups representing youth and the arts, fashion or music.

There has been some interesting discussion on The RiotACT of late in regard to Braidwood and it’s progress as a place of commerce and tourism – http://the-riotact.com/?p=17981&cpage=1#comments

The discussion has brought forward some very valuable suggestions but there has been a little negativity, albeit justified to some extent.

All of that aside; this is just the kind of event that Braidwood needs in order to attract attention to this unique little town that has so much to offer visitors. This will be a thouroughly entertaining and quirky event for all ages and well worth visiting Braidwood for!

Why not make a weekend of it and stay overnight. If an overnight stay interests you, contact us through the website as we can organise a dinner on the saturday night at The Old Cheese Factory at nearby Reidsdale, Simply drop us a line and indicate that you’d be interested in a “Classic Diner” experience on the evening of the Billy Cart Derby! If the interest is there, we can organise it!

It would be particularly great to get classic car clubs involved in this event. What about entries that visually represent particular makes or models? It would be great to see some mid-century classics or even hot rods in town on the day of the event.

Please forward this post to any classic car enthusiasts that you might know!

The Braidwood Lions club have done Braidwood proud by coming up with this event, which has been made possible by extremely generous support from The Braidwood Community Bank and to a smaller extent other corporate sponsors including Hoola Hoop.

Braidwood businesses are really getting behind this event and we personally would like to extend an invitation to people from Canberra and around the region to come out and have some fun!!!

I attended this event yesterday with my husband and a friend came too. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We entered the open and the ladies and got one prize. Braidwood Lions must be very pleased to have so many entries. It was an event designed for children, where participation was the main idea, and they succeeded very well in that. Suggestions for next year: move the start a little further from the intersection as it was quite congested, with kids and carts in the way of the trucks bringing the carts back. Also, I think some barriers along the road are necessary to keep spectators safe. Our cart was 55 kg and with a 100kg driver, would do a lot of damage at only a few KPH, if it veered off the course.

Great day out for families, congratulations to all the organisers.

This is great news! I concur with Hoola Hoop – Just what Braidwood needs! Congratulations to the Braidwood Lions and the corporate sponsors – Well done!

From what I can gather from the website, there’s not just 1 race and activities will go for about 3 hours! What a great way to spend an afternoon!!!!

Hey, I have a suggestion! There are all of these Australian online sports betting services these days that will take a bet on anything! Wouldn’t it be just brilliant to get one of them interested in this. There could be a little bookies tent with a computer where people could go in and place bets! Now, how Australian is that – Billy Cart Betting!!
Bloody Priceless!

I haven’t been in a billy cart derby in some time, and am very tempted to enter.
