Just drove past Brand Depot today and noticed that the back area had been gutted out. Went inside to take a look. Aside from Lollipops and ToysRUs the rest of the Brand Depot structure has been gutted. Looks like they are getting ready for Masters to take over the site.

Felt sorry for the staff who are now out of work (even temporary if they are relocating).

I’ve got some photos of area from today if you want to see whats happening on the site.

Masters would certainly make more sense. Fairly well located for people in both Qbn and the new north, it would provide a bit of competition for their respective Magnet Marts.

Big-W, DSE and Woolies makes no sense, there are other stores in those chains around closer to people. Why would they drive all the way out there.

It appears KarlV was half on the money, but it is not Masters going in there, instead a massive Woolworths Supermarket, Big W and Dick Smith. Story in the Canberra crimes.

Seeing the nearly completed CostCo building on Saturday was the first time I have been glad for the presence of the Brand Depot node – because you wouldn’t want the sheer ugliness of that building anywhere that actually mattered.

I have to say though that I am surprised the airport management allowed such ugliness on their turf. I guess if the cheque (check?) is big enough, anything goes…

CostCo have a sign out saying they are now accepting membership applications. Yes that’s right – a shop you have to be a member of before you are allowed to buy anything there! Should fit right in in Canberra, where you can’t even buy a drink from most of the drinking establishments unless you join first. I predict an upswing in the sale of deep freezer-led upswing in the local economy.

Isnt Costco going in out there?

Werent there also rumours about the size of the building being a suitable size for hangar space once Snowtown started bringing in more freight jets?

I’ve heard the rumour as well… It could be (although the building is not very square which will make things a little difficult, although not impossible)… I’d always thought that the space between the building and the runway was a little small to park planes in, but after checking out google maps it’s about the same distance from the runway as the new terminal…

I guess time will tell… The big thing however is does the airlines consider CBR to be enough of a destination with easy access to the larger cities (or would snow be willing to make things cheap enough that from a price point CBR is attractive)? I doubt we would get enough freight on our own to make filling a freighter aircraft worthwhile…

Costco has built its own building between Brand Depleted and the cheap pharmacy/not so cheap clothes place. Looks pretty big and it came together in no time at all.

Where was it announced that Masters was taking over the site? Seems an awfully odd place to open up a hardware shop, especially when the Woolworths (who also own Masters) owned Magnet Mart are located at two sensible locations nearby, specifically Gungahlin and Qbn.
