Breaking down the crime statistics. Tuggers for vandals, Inner North for rapists, Belco for burglars,

crime statistics

This morning we ran the police line on Crime Statistics.

But we’ve learned to take our own look.

The big trick is to untick all the crime categories to get down to specific areas.

So here we go.

Traffic Infringement Notices

TINs

Wow, Belconnen represent!

Property Damage

property damage

Good to see Tuggeranong asserting itself!

Digging deeper Kambah is really showing its colours there with the other West Tuggers suburbs standing tall with them.

Motor Vehicle Theft

motor vehicle theft

Tuggers duelling Belco for the crown, but Woden and South Canberra well in contention (South Canberra having the cars one would want to steal).

Digging down Bonython is a bit of a standout (bear in mind Kambah has the population of four normal suburbs), as is Griffith, Phillip, and central Belconnen.

Theft

theft

When it comes to theft the Inner North finally comes into its own.

Standout suburbs are Dickson with a bullet, Greenway, Calwell, Wanniassa, Phillip, Griffith, Fyshwick, City, Belconnen, and Gungahlin town centre.

Robbery

robbery

Look at that Belco pride shining out!

Belconnen town centre really standing out there but Holt going strong. Other standouts are Civic and Braddon.

Burglary

burglary

Belconnen takes the (dubious) prize once again.

But what suburbs?

Holt is neck and neck with the town centre (although adjacent Evatt, Spence, and Macquarie are suggesting a north-south axis). Weston rates the first mention for The Creek and Barton Forrest, Griffith and Fyshwick all show up.

Similarly Turner, O’Connor and Lyneham have nice things to steal.

Bonner rates a first mention too.

Down south Monash is a standout with Wanniassa not far behind. Kambah probably rates a mention despite the population skew.

Offences Against a Person

offences against a person

Belconnen takes the crown again as we get into the serious stuff. (This is threats, harassment, and kidnapping)

Digging in there aren’t any particular hotspots evident.

Sexual Assault

sexual assault

Pound for pound you’ve got to call this for the Inner North with Belconnen making it a bit of a northside thing.

Digging down Campbell is notable, Civic predictable, Gungahlin town centre eyebrow raising, Belconnen town centre alarming (much higher than Civic).

Assault

assault

Well the Inner North takes this one hands down.

Predictably it’s Civic blowing this out. Belconnen town centre rates a mention as does Greenway, central Gungahlin, Phillip, and pretty much anywhere with bars.

Homicide

homicide

When it comes to the big daddy Woden finally troubles the scorers, with a double for Hughes.

Yarralumla is home to the only other homicide recorded in the Q2 2012.

could we please have this data on a suburb by suburb basis? As an option? Or just by suburb with a rating? Safe, relatively safe, be careful, and ‘watch out?

Just a question here but what is the difference between Theft and Burglary?

Regarding Traffic Infringement Notices – do the details relate to where the offender lives or where the offender was caught?

Puts things a bit out if that details where the offence was commited… I live on the southside of Canberra and the last time I signed up to make a voluntary contribution to the coffers was in Belconnen…

As a local, I can enlighten readers about the high rates of property crime in Griffith.

Stuart Flats.

A while back, my neighbour had his house burgled and his car stolen while he was away. After reporting it to the police (who admitted they couldn’t do much) he hopped in his wife’s car and drove around to Stuart Flats, and there it was, parked in plain view.

The place is a cesspit – taxi drivers won’t go there, and decent people unlucky enough to be allocated housing there spend all their time trying to get out. Like its equivalent in Civic, this monument to ACT Housing’s failures just provides criminals with subsidised accommodation in handy walking distance of their targets.

We were in the same year then Jim. Going to the booner reunion later this year? Don’t know about the wild west so much… It always felt quiet to me.

Maybe it’s more my memory of the school, rather than The Creek itself.

I hadn’t heard of any reunions! (then again, this is about as social as I like to get online).

🙂 I was told it is being organised on Facebook. I had to be told over the phone, because I am not a facebooker. Anyway, search Holder High 1992, I am told.

To remain a tiny bit on topic, Weston Creek has always seemed quieter than most of the newer areas. This comes from a current Kambah resident.

It will be interesting to see the trend as Gungahlin becomes a getto.

This is a reason why new Macgregor should be renamed as a new suburb. It is demographically and aesthetically very different to old Macgregor, and the very clear distinction between the two deserves to be recognised through separate suburb names.

Perhaps the new one could be given a name that reflects its culture more accurately (like ‘S***hole’).

No surprises at all for mine. Tuggeranong always seems to cop it (Such a hole, full of ferals etc..) from those on the northside but the numbers would suggest that the Belconnen area is leading the way in such categories.

It will be interesting to see the trend as Gungahlin becomes a getto.

And my home ground Weston Creek either lowest or equal lowest in every single category! Go 2611!

I’m sure that wasn’t the case when I was growing up there – certainly felt a little like the wild west back then! Certainly a lot more booners around during that time anyway. (Holder High, final year through before it closed!)

I did three years at Holder High in the 1970s, and upon reflection I think the school and the whole
area were pretty rough.

For example, I went back to see one of my old teachers a few years after I left. I was 6 foot 5, dressed in black motorcycle leathers and I’ve never been a particularly cheery looking person. So you can imagine my surprise as I was verbally abused along the lines of “WTF are you doing here?” and worse by groups of little kids as I walked down one of the corridors.

As for the crime stats now, I think it’d be worthwhile seeing the figures on a per capita basis.

Anyone who wants to wiki the populations of the suburbs and do the division is welcome to do so.

But aside from Kambah they’re reasonably comparable, and anyway the variations over different crime categories remain interesting.

It’s not like one heavily populated region dominates all the stats.

Kambah is I believe one of the largest suburbs on this planet. Yes?

Overall numbers are good to pick the areas to avoid but we really need some per capita numbers/maps as well.
