Brown water in West Belconnen

Actew Water is warning that they’re fiddling in the pipes out West and not to panic if your water is brown:

ACTEW Water is improving the water network for residents in MacGregor, Latham and Holt to ensure an ongoing fresh, clear water supply and lessen the need for future water supply disruptions.

These essential works, taking place today, may result in temporary water discolouration for some customers in the afternoon and evening.

ACTEW Water apologises for any inconvenience this essential work may cause. We wish to assure our customers that these works will result in long-term improvements to their local water network.

We would ask affected customers to store and refridgerate some drinking water in sealable containers should they require it during this period. Householders are also advised to refrain from using washing machines and dishwashers, and showering/bathing during this time.

A bit more notice would have helped.

I don’t think ACTEW flush the pipe systems out like they used to do. ACTEW now charge the householder to flush the system.

I heard they weren’t flushing so regularly during the drought which is sort of understandable but I suspect they’ve decided it suits them now to leave it to us.
I agree about the need for a bit more notice, but we’ve never gotten any notice at all. When we rang they never knew what was going on and even during the worst of the drought they just told us to run the garden tap. Sometimes if the water stayed dirty for days and we rang again then by then more info had reached the people who answer the phones and they could tell us more. We ended up not running the garden tap unless it suited us to water the garden, otherwise it was an expensive guessing game whether it helped much or not on any particular occasion.

I live in the south-west corner of Scullin. Haven’t noticed any brown water, but since this morning our tap water has had a noticable “plasticky” smell. I’ve run the taps on full for about 20 minutes, but little or no improvement. Any other west Belco peeps experiencing the same?

Is it worth asking whether residents will be compensated for contributing to flush out the discoloured water that, according to ACTEW Water, is not drinkable?

Would you rather they just dont perform maintinance and repairs?

At least they told us this time. A few weeks back we didn’t know until we turned the taps on and brown water came out.
