A media release has just come in (possibly 16 minutes early at 11:44pm) announcing the Brumbies and Raiders are joining forces to stem the tide of red ink:

In a World first, the Canberra Raiders and ACT Brumbies have agreed to merge both clubs into a single organisation.

Coaches and players will remain with their current teams and continue to play in both competitions.

Executive and board members will be asked to reapply for their positions in the new organisation.

Both teams will continue to compete in elite Rugby League and Rugby Union, with a combined brand and administration.

Reduced costs through rationalising the Executive CANBERRA Super Club and Board by over 50% will be passed on to fans. Prices are Expected to be cut by half.

Cheaper tickets to games, and cheaper beer at games. Financial members of each team will receive a 50% refund for the remainder of the year.

Team sponsors and advertisers will benefit from the merger with both gaining exposure from the two different codes.

Further details will be released in the coming days.

I know that such articles are posted in good fun… but why do we do this? I’m yet to see one that was funny… ever.

You must be very young then. The Canberra Times had a good run in the 70s and 80s, I think the most effective one was about draining the lake to get rid of the carp. Whoever wrote those stories had the added challenge of spelling out “April Fools” using the first letter of each paragraph.

And where does it come from? Is this more Americanised crap that we feel the need to inflict on our culture (similar to the rant that I’ve begun to inflict on children and their parents every 31 October)?

Maybe I’m an old fuddy duddy – but I don’t see the value or merit in such crap.

It’s all a bit older than ‘Americanised crap’ if you’d bother to look up wikipedia.

I’m more concerned with the modern Australian culture of whinging about everything.

Yes, I see it as harmless fun.

Mind you, I did convince Mr P that there was a snake in our house this morning, so I comment as a winner.

Mrs P, that is low. I can’t stand snakes. If he has nightmares you know who is to blame!

Won’t this just further confuse your new ‘sport correspondent’?

Designing that uniform must have taken minutes.

If we start worrying about things that will confuse Barcham we’ll never stop.

*sigh* That’s the best they’ve got?

Yes. That’s the sad part.

Should have just announced they were going to re-sign Josh Dugan. Now that would have been funny.

Cheaper beer at games! yeah that definitely makes it a joke.

I think this must be a hoax. No way they would pass on savings to the fans.

*sigh* That’s the best they’ve got?

One of the lamest April Fool jokes ever.

There’s probably some complicated rule about such things that are perpetrated before midnight…
