Brumbies do enough to keep the miracle going. ACT 19, NSW 15

It’s important to remember just how miserable last season was for the Brumbies and just how many stars they cleaned out in favour of no-name players.

With that in mind Foxsports has word of their first win over NSW in Sydney since 2002.

No 51-10 this time, but 19-15 will do.

Roll on the All Black laden, but out of sorts, Auckland Blues at Canberra Stadium next week!

The format was changed last year so it now goes:
Competition points > Number of wins > Points differential.
So the Brumbies need to gain just a single competition point next week against the Blues to guarantee third place.
However, if they don’t pick up any points, and the Reds get a bonus point win against the Waratahs they’ll overtake the Brumbies because despite being on the same amount of points, they’ll have one more win.

I know you’re right, but it’s strange that the Canberra Times don’t know this.:

“The only way the Reds can finish ahead of the Brumbies to win the conference is if they annihilate the Waratahs in their final round match this weekend, while the Brumbies are beaten by a record score by the off-colour Blues in Canberra. A dearth of bonus points has worked against the Reds this year.”

Written by Greg Growden, who is a SMH hack. One of the worst rugby reporters in Australia, not that we have many good ones to compare him to.

There’s a lot of confusion and it will be addressed in tonight’s podcast! (and was in last week’s for that matter)

Watched it on Foxtel and decided Phil Kearns should be dropped into a vat of smoking hot oil (we all know he used to play for the Waratahs but most people eventually get over old associations). Ref was pretty useless and keen on penalising the Brumbies (probably because of crowd influence) but better than some. The Brumbies did enough, just.

The Waratahs were unimpressive.

+100

“The Brumbies don’t deserve to win this game”, I heard him say on more than one occasion. Considering they were penalised into about what, 30% of the ball? The fact they overcame that and managed to win, combined with the fact that the Tahs weren’t good enough to score with such a weight of possession, means the Brumbies thoroughly deserved it.

I had a go at Clarkie on Twitter mid week, after he sent out a tweet saying ‘Can’t wait to see the new look Tahs backline in action this week!!’. Nevermind the fact that the Brumbies and Reds are jostling for playoff positions, while the mediocre Tahs jostle for 11th position.

The Blues game has no bearing on the Brumbies making the finals. The Brumbies are ahead of the Reds by 5 points. Even if the Brums lose and the Reds win with a bonus point, they tie on the ladder and it goes down to for and against which is in favour of the Brumbies by 90 points.

GO THE BRUMBIES!!

Sorry Knuckles, but it don’t work like that- if the Brumbies lose without a bonus point and the Reds get a bonus point win, the Reds would have 11 wins against the Brumbies 10, so they’d go through to the finals…in fact, if the Brumbies don’t get a point they could well finish as low as 8th

But that would mean for the first time in my life I have to go for the Tahs next weekend.
I feel dirty.

Great result for the Brumbies; just a pity a couple of the Waratahs finished the game upright.

The Brumbies only require 1 competition point next week to secure third spot.

Even if they don’t the Reds require a bonus point win over the Tahs to overtake the Brumbies, and those fixtures rarely produce try-fests.

It should also be remembered that the Super Rugby format has changed so number of wins now trumps points differential.

However, I believe the Brumbies’ wins and PD are good enough to trump some of the other teams fighting for 6th spot if the Reds to happen to overtake them.

So, it’ll be a mighty effort from the Blues to deny the Brumbies any competition points considering the Brumbies have received points in EVERY SINGLE MATCH this year.

Also, the Brumbies have kept their opposition scoreless in the last 20 minutes of their last 9 matches.

That’s impressive.

Unfortunately the Blues rediscovered their mojo last night, and they have always been a bogey side for the Brumbies. Given the respective positions of the Reds, Crusaders, Bulls and Sharks I think it will be a case of “close but no cigar” for the Brumbies this year. But well done to the new coaching staff, and always great to beat the filth from Sydney..
