The Brumbies are reporting that the accursed boot of Johnny Wilkinson and a miserable scrummaging performance have seen our brave touring lads go down 20-6 against the millionaire factory of Toulon.

England’s 2003 Rugby World Cup hero Jonny Wilkinson was the chief destroyer for the home side, kicking four penalty goals before he was replaced in the 59th minute.

Wilkinson’s chore was made easier with the CA Brumbies gifting a number of opportunities on the back of a problematic set piece. In total the ACT lost seven tighthead scrums and gave away an additional five free kicks on their own feed.

Despite a 1-3 tour record head coach Andy Friend reckons it’s been a great bonding experience for the younger players and puts them three months ahead of their preparations for 2010.

Banning rucking was a big mistake. It only encourages the loosies to lie all over the ball.
As a former prop, there was nothing more exiting than seeing a lost fullback or wing(h)er at the bottom of a ruck. Fair Game.
I’ve given plenty to opponents, and the odd team mate, and received plenty.
Getting a good shoe-ing never hurt me,
Getting a good shoe-ing never hurt me,
Getting a good shoe-ing never hurt me,
or my short term memory loss!

Running Rugby was killed by the laws that were designed to promote it. Oldstyle forward play would often devolve into ugly wrestling when executed poorly so they wanted to eliminate it. When executed well, it committed defenders and opened up the field for the backs. Now you only need a minimal defensive commitment to the breakdown so there is a constant league-like wall of defenders.

Over-refereeing is the obvious corollary of outlawing the shoe.

Still a successful tour for the young Brumbies me thinks.
I often list “Rugby” when asked to indicate my religion, and while I am a fervent (one-eyed) Wallaby & Brumbies fan, I am losing interest in the game as a spectacle.
Over-refereeing is destroying the game I love.
There are too many games now days that are won by penalty shots.
What happened to running Rugby?
How can you score 3 tries and lose to a team that scores 1?

spleen vented.
