Brumbies to sell Canberra to South Africa

Chief Minister Stanhope has announced that the “Live in Canberra” team are going on a return frolic to South Africa with the Brumbies, which is jolly good news for them.

With most of white South Africa queuing up to get out of the country it probably won’t hurt to point them in our direction. They certainly assimilate faster in the suburbs than migrants from anywhere else bar New Zealand.

As an added bonus the Brumbies are really the only thing we’ve got in this town which would impress them.

Clyde Rathbone’s certainly had a lovely extended holiday here.

Also I’m sure really wealthy black south africans would be welcome too, but do you want to bet on the ratios?

yes …. but the odds would not make a market. Stanhope doesn’t care where the money comes from.

…white South Africa…; …migrant groups, including european ones, take generations to become indistinguishable..; …wealthy black south africans…

your terms, how is it my ‘sad race obsessed mind’?

what, johnboy, they ”look like you” so have assimilated? and are therefore ‘australian’? have a good think on monday what is going on.

Only in your own sad race obsessed mind is that what I’m talking about.

I’m talking about going to the same parties, watching the same sport, joining the same clubs, doing the same community service. The things that bind communities together.

what, johnboy, they ”look like you” so have assimilated? and are therefore ‘australian’? have a good think on monday what is going on.

If you’re so removed from life as to get huffy about that statement then feel free to storm off in high dudgeon.

Some migrant groups, including european ones, take generations to become indistinguishable, others act like they’ve been here for 5 generations within a year of arrival.

Don’t blame me for that.

They certainly assimilate faster in the suburbs than migrants from anywhere else bar New Zealand.

sorry johnboy and mrpc, but can you explicate which cultures/races don’t fit into australian culture, and what do you mean by ‘australian culture’ and ‘assimiliate’ here anyway?

i find this is a bit offensive.

My point is that I believe that Stanhope will market to white south africans who are “fleeing” black south africa. The marketing campaign will not be focused at black south africa. This will come with the capital that black south africa needs to build a future and Stanhope will be hoping to draw that capital to Canberra.

A quote in the CT after New Year’s Eve from a South African family was quite sad. It said that they can never take their kids out after dark at home, so the Civic fireworks were quite e xciting for them.

Live in Canberra? Where the flap are they going to live? Why are they trying to entice people to move to Canberrra when housing costs a fortune?

I see it still never takes someone too long to pull the racism card out.

White South Africans generally want to leave, and generally fit into Australian culture quite well (unlike some other cultures/races).

Whether there is a racial motivation or not in their wanting to leave is really none of your business.

As for what Canberra has to offer, well, even living at The Causeway would be safer and more pleasant than living in South Africa. If they want to move here, great, we’ll put out a welcome mat at the airport!

The second para in this story could be read with some very negative undertones about migration. I didn’t see anything in the media release to give this interpretation. Perhaps Johnboy would like to clarify what he thinks of migration and assimilation, just so that other readers don’t get the wrong idea about his personal views?

I wonder whether the marketing effort will be directed toward the black majority as much as whites???? It would seem very un-labor for Stanhope to capitalise on the exodus of white capital – profits and assets that are likely to have beed gained from years of intitutionalised racism.

Surely Stanhope is not the Arthur Calwell of the 21st century?
