After Jake had a mumble to a journalist on Monday about wanting 20,000 fans to come down to Canberra Stadium for the curtain raiser this Saturday the team has this Wednesday put out the call:

University of Canberra Brumbies fans are being asked to contribute to the Gold Rush at Canberra Stadium this Saturday night, with team kit and hats a show of support for the players going to battle with the Reds.

Membership packs have been floating into mailboxes throughout the ACT over the last couple of weeks and Brumbies fans are being asked to make the most of their yellow caps and scarves on Saturday night.

In addition, bright yellow flags thanks to Service One Banking will be handed out at the gates, free of charge for Brumbies fans to join the Gold Rush.

Since Monday, Head Coach Jake White has spoken about turning Canberra back into the fortress it was in the early 2000’s, with crowd figures regularly climbing above the 20,000 mark. With the return of Clyde Rathbone and the selection of Wallaby Captain David Pocock, White was confident Brumbies Rugby supporters would turn out in big numbers to support their team.

Good game for first of the season. Much happier with the current attitude. Seeing Quade throw an intercepted pass, well… sweet sweet icing.

That was a good crowd…I reckoned on about 16000 and think that was about right. …some biggish empty areas, but better than last season’s opener when i think they had about 8500?
The amount of tickets that fly round Canberra for these games in amazing….do they count bar codes coming inside or just tickets “as allocated” here?

All in all, I don’t enjoy these all-Aussie games, the teams are too familiar with each other, the styles clash and it’s all about safety first….but that was a pretty decisive result, the Brumbies defence was awesome and really in the zone. Couldn’t have wished for a better start or message.

One of the best crowds in the last couple of years: 17053 (I may have the last two digits swapped).
Great game to watch as well 🙂

Oh, and I promise not to antagonise Raiders supporters unduly this year. However, if the discussion of crowd sizes and overall success come up, be prepared for figures 🙂

I agree with CrocodileGandhi. 20K is pretty optomistic. If we have good weather, and everyone shows up, we’ll probably crack 15K for the Reds game.

Ahh well, I know two bums that will be on seats. Go the Brumbies!

They will be lucky to get 15,000. Canberra crowds only show in big numbers once a team is making the finals series consistently. If the Brumbies have a cracking year, they might get those numbers in 2014.

Spot on.
